Because carfax has whatever's its been fed. Carfax is not worth the paper it's written on, don't use it.

Except if you are selling a car and it has issues reported to Carfax, you will shrink your pool of buyers drastically and dealers will lowball you even more on a trade-in.

With that said, it's worth buying one anyway IMO.

As an actual Dealer, let me answer your question.

CarFax pulls data from local law enforcement, insurance, and registration from local DMVs.

The fact that CarFax does not show the 3rd owner probably means one of the owners either never registered the vehicle in their name, or their local tag title office is not connected to the national electronic database and therefore did not send the information for Carfax to be able to access.

Like someone said earlier, CarFax is not always 100% accurate, but at the end of the day, it still DRASTICALLY affects the value of a vehicle because that is what people look at. Its like Kelly Blue Book, as a Dealer, I tell people that it is not 100% correct and neither banks nor insurance companies use it, however at the end of the day, it still affects how I price vehicles.
