Making sense of tire ratings?

I'm looking at the UTQC rating on tires and am trying to determine which value will determine grip? I'm specifically looking for a street tire that will do well on a 1/4 drag strip. Does a treadwear rating of 200 vs. 280 within the same manufacturer automatically mean the softer tire will grip better (i.e. 200 rated tire), or should I be looking at the traction rating of the tire (i.e. A vs. AA) and assume the higher traction rating tire will grip better, even though the traction ratings are performed on wet asphalt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, if you just want to make a DOT drag tire recommendation, I'm all ears to that also. Thanks!

best street (DD) tire is a michelin pilot super sport.
drag tire.. on a 19" wheel ? your best bet will be an n spec michelin cup.

i dont look into treadwear much anymore... here's why

the michelin ps2 has a lower treadwear than the michelin super sport, meanwhile the supersport offer a lot more grip.

unless youre making a crazy amount of TORQUE (800+rwtq), you will be more than fine with a toyo r888. i have it on my "track" set up and i can not spin my rears no matter how much i try.

drag specific 19" tires arent made for our cars.. but theyre also completely unnecessary. AWD ...

michelin cups are $650 a pop for the rears... toyos are $390

Good info, thanks! My car is probably making right around 600hp, and I currently have Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. With traction control on I spin the tires all the time until PSM kicks on (not good in a drag race). With PSM off (my preferred method), I spin the tires at the 1st and 2nd shift. I know our cars weren't made for the dragstrip, but there's 3 tracks all close to me and I can't stand to hear the vettes and mustangs spinning tires all summer running 13's. The urge is too strong, so I do spend more weekends than I should at drag strip.

600 wheel or engine ?
either way, you will have more than enough grip with r888's.
remember something though, when launching, you want a LITTLE bit of constant slipping in 1st and 2nd.

on my michelin pss's, if i slip the clutch just right i get enough slip in the rear to sling shot the car foward while the front makes sure im still accelerating. i dont know if that makes sense, but a little slip is good.

also, try launching in normal, not sport mode (sport send much more power to the rears)

Tire rack says Michelin SS has better dry traction than PS2. But I could not tell the difference from my earlier PS2s. The PSS are a lot cheaper is another reason why I got them over PS2. Generally lower treadwear is a sticker tire & better for hook-up. Have you seen any Michelin or otherwise data that actually shows better traction for the PSS over PS2?
