Ways to increase car performance

What is the best way to increase your car performance? I heard a lot about ECU remapping, rototest and performance remapping. Are these implementable? Will it help me enhancing my car's performance with the same old engine?

Best way to improve the car's performance (assuming circuit tracks) is to:
1) better tires
2) remove dead weight
3) gearing
4) suspension
5) more power

Like GT3 Chuck said - better driver skills can make a world of difference. I remember being at track events and getting waved by from cars in a totally different league of performance.
