Performance , but at what cost ?
Performance , but at what cost ?
I missed out on a stock car , so have been on the hunt for another one.
I knew the whole time that I would want to modify it and goal was to build it to somewhere around 600 to 650 whp .
Now that I have been on the look again , I am almost set on pulling the trigger on a car that has been built that is putting down somewhere around 650 to the wheels and close to 700 torque .
After reading a couple of other threads on here , I am really concerned about the longevity of the block at these levels.
Granted I am 42 years old , I will not be going to the drag strip every weekend , in fact don't know if I ever will . But I do in fact like highway pulls , as well as just the every now and then use of the power and joy that these cars can provide.
After reading a few posts on here , I am almost scared of these power levels.
Are these isolated incidents , or how common are these problems with these type builds . Where is the threshold of safety with these motors?

The answer to your question hinges on whether you are looking at a .1 or .2 (I.e., mezger vs. DFI)! If the former, block can handle it. If the latter, then you're likely approaching the max (if bent rods don't crimp the block's ability to generate more power then the limitation on fueling will surely hinder additional power beyond 650whp). There are many more on here more knowledgable than me on this issue...
It is my understanding that the 997.1 is able to handle the power levels you want. With that said, I have a built engine now after mine threw a connecting rod on a 700 crank hp tune. Mine is now a 3.8L making about 567whp/615wtq. Couldn't be happier about the power. Just the right amount...for now.

Like I said, it is my understanding that these engines normally handle this power. That's why I had no reservations about jumping from the 580hp package to the 700hp package (crank).
Just know that it costs $20-30k to rebuild one of these motors (assuming block is ok).

I love power and speed more than most. My stock 2012 TTS with Cargraphics exhaust is scary fast. There are very few drivers who can actually use this kind of power.
Buy a clean low mileage stock car with all the options and enjoy!

The Three Rules Of Porsche:
If you can't afford to write the check, you're not rich to buy it.
If you can't afford to fix it, you're not rich enough to mod it.
If you can't afford to write it off, you're not rich enough to track it.
And so it goes........
