Reinventing the 240SX: A S14 Kouki on Rennen Motorsport MV20 Wheels
From as far back as the sexy sports car’s heyday – circa 1988 – and going up to include snazzy hatchback models in ’91 and more classic coupe configurations towards its demise, Nissan’s 240SX has always held a place in import tuners’ hearts. When the world turned to more “utilitarian” vehicles like SUVs, the 240SX went the way of the Do-Do Bird, but found a new life amongst the “drifting” crowd in locales like Tokyo and L.A. Fast-forward to the 2015 SEMA show in glitzy Las Vegas, where a formerly stock S14 “Kouki” variant 240SX stunned onlookers courtesy of a custom Volcanic Orange paint job, Rocket Bunny V2 “Boss” Conversion aero kit and Rennen Motorsport MV20 18-inch wheels.
The owner of the vehicle, Will of WD Ultimate, did a nearly complete overhaul on the Japanese classic once he came in possession of it, wasting no time in dropping the sexy body kit and wicked Volcanic Orange paint on the car. This 240 went on to become one of only five S14’s with this type of kit, and the only one residing on the U.S. east coast – but that wasn’t the end of the story for this Rocket Bunny S14Nissan, which went on to receive a suspension upgrade from the factory struts and springs to an Air Lift Performance V3 air suspension as well as Recaro racing seats, custom-upholstered in red with diamond stitching to match Takata harnesses.
Completed just one week before SEMA 2015, the 240 was a featured centerpiece atToyo Tires’ Treadpass – an all-new, ultra-modern passageway structure that connects the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Of course, as all custom car aficionados know, a wide body vehicle needs widely-staggered wheels…unless they want to be laughed amongst their peers. Coming to the rescue of this wickedly attractive Volcanic Orange 240SX was Rennen Forged, tasked with building wheels to suit this beast. With 18 x 10 and 18 x 12.5 Rennen Motorsport MV20’s wrapped in Toyo R888 rubber, the S14 Kouki 240 made more than a few heads turn at SEMA – taking into consideration all the scantily-clad booth babes saturating the exhibition – with Rennen representatives admitting it was far from an easy task choosing a wheel finish to match the spectacular paint job of the sports car. The Rennen rims on this 240SX were made of 6061-T6 forged aluminum, a lightweight metal that is used in aerospace manufacturing technology, offering further proof of the wheel manufacturer’s commitment to perfection.
Nissan’s 240SX may be a coveted Japanese sports coupe that disappeared from new car lineups years ago, but its spirit lives on in project cars like the one put together by Will of WD Ultimate and Rennen Forged.
