Oil pressure at idle..
Oil pressure at idle..
Just wanted to see what bar pressure eveyone is holding at when your cars are fully warmed at idle... I can't remember past pressures but lately my gauge shows about 1.2 and looking to see if that's within limits.. When I start moving needle goes up as normal...

Also, while I have no experience with the 997 Turbo I can tell you with my 996 Turbo its hot idle oil pressure can vary a bit -- maybe a couple of tenths of a bar working out (so to speak) the pressure from the gage's needle position -- depending upon the ambient temperature. On mild days or in the cool of the morning I can drive around town -- with the A/C off -- and the hot idle oil pressure is higher than if I use the car the same way on a much hotter day.
Also, there is the matter of how fresh the oil is. Oil with lots of miles and possibly lots of contamination may result in a bit lower than "normal" oil pressure. It is probably more my imagination than real but with the Turbo as the oil approaches the 5K mile mark I believe I detect a bit lower oil pressure under as best I can tell the same conditions. Regardless I adhere to a 5K mile oil/filter service schedule for both of my Porsches.
My point is if someone says the oil pressure is 1.5 bar I'm sure it is but under what driving conditions and ambient temperature conditions and with oil with how many miles and what type of driving?
The engine's oil needs at idle is small. AFAIK Porsche gives no hot idle oil pressure number just a high pressure reading at some RPM and with the oil at some temperature.
Remember too the oil pressure reading is being taken some distance away from the pump, at the distant end of the oil supply system. While 1.2 bar seems low the mains/rods have plenty of oil pressure and supply and this goes too for the oil jets that spray oil at the underside of the pistons. And the cams and such at the "top" of the engine have 1.2 bar oil pressure and that's plenty.
You have to be careful when comparing oil pressure readings from vehicle to vehicle. The oil pressure gage is not a precision instrument. A variation of a few "tenths" of a bar is no real cause for concern.
