Gauge Cluster Repair?
Gauge Cluster Repair?
Curious,
Has anyone had to have one of the three screens in their instrument cluster repaired? I damaged the main screen on mine (997TT) this past weekend when removing it (bone headed mistake). I was hoping to quite the squeaks coming from this area only to cause damage...
I was considering hiring http://vdorepair.com, it appears someone from this organization used to be on this forum and on 6sp but the account is inactive since late 2015. Anyone have an experience with this company or any other company for that matter?
I'm considering buying another 997 cluster and swapping over the screen, it looks like it's connected via a basic ribbon. Anyone know if the regular 997's have the same screens as the GT3's and TT's?
I appreciate any input you can provide me in my endeavor to repair my silly mistake.

For those who ever run into this issue or have failed pixels in the future. The 987 platform has the same screens and they can be had fairly cheap at around $200-$300.

I have had my 2002 Boxster's instrument cluster sent there 2 times now for an always on ABS light. I won't bore you with the details but the consensus with the techs is the problem is with the cluster and not with the ABS module. (Well, some boring details: There is no ABS error code. A new ABS module didn't help. A borrowed instrument cluster from another car didn't have its ABS light on.)
Both times the cluster has come back with the ABS light still stuck on even when the 2nd time I believe the tech there repaired the unit.
One time I was not charged anything either by VDORepair (which is what it was called when I sent the cluster there the first time) and the 2nd time around $70 when it was AutoParts.Repair.
Believe it or not I'm not discouraged and intend to try one more time. I think a swap of some parts -- which the cluster repair tech told me about -- will have the light out.
My advice is to call the place and you will probably get to speak to the tech. He may call you back rather than just come to the phone when you call. You can talk to him about your cluster's problems and let him tell you if he can help you or not.
There is a place, Palo Alto Speedometer, in Palo Alto, CA, that is reportedly a pretty good place for this kind of work. I tried to use the place but it doesn't do Boxster clusters. Call this place and see if it can help you.
