Turbo lag?

I am in the market for a 997 turbo. As a first step I rented one for the day from a website called Turo to see how I liked the car. For those that don't know, turo is a website where individuals can rent out their private cars. The turbo I rented for the day was actually a full time rental and although it only had 38,000 miles it felt more like 200,000, it had lived a very hard life. Everyone who drove the car agreed.

Anyways, it was a 2010 PDK and there were 2 issues with the car that I didn't like and I'm hoping I can get some
input if these were just issues with this particular car or are par for the course:

- Even when revved up in gear, there was a very long delay for the turbos to build boost. Maybe 1-1.5 seconds. I'd imagine this would make balancing the car mid corner with throttle really really difficult. I am really hoping this lag was because something was wrong with the car which I suspect is the case as on a couple occasions the car stopped building boost altogether until the ignition was cycled. I have driven a few turbo cars and have never had any complaints as far as turbo lag: m4, m2, m6, 335i, x5m, Subaru STI, BMW 320i, Mercedes c class (on these cars I effectively couldn't tell they were turbo'd.. not trying to be picky here).

- The PDK was very slow to upshift, if I wanted to upshift manually I would have to anticipate and shift about 3,000 RPM early or else I would hit redline. Also, downshifts were very lazy like an automatic transmission. In comparison the DCT in my M3 is very quick on upshifts and crisp on downshifts. If this is how the PDK behaves the solution for me is simple.. get the 6 speed. Which would probably limit my search to gen 1 cars as the 6 speed seems very rare on gen 2s.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
