‘Rev-Off’ – Wilton House Supercars – August 14th 2011

One of England’s most elegant estates and home to the Earl and Countess of Pembroke’s family for 460 years. Wilton House in Wiltshire hosted the, ‘Supercars at Wilton House’ last weekend – an event to raise money for the STARS appeal, providing the local hospital in Salisbury with extra resources to help provide the best possible experience for patients.

The organisers target of 10,000 visitors looks to have been met. QuickSilver Exhausts were proud to be the Sponsors and to join the judging team of the ‘Rev-Off’. As manufacturers of the world’s finest Supercar exhaust systems this was the perfect event for QuickSilver.
The ‘Rev Off’ was created by one of the organisers, Jay Broom, and was enormously popular, the star of the day. The spectators were so dense that the judges had difficulty in moving from car to car. This is a format that will surely be seen at other events. At the end of the afternoon, as the cars left, the drives of Wilton House were lined with hundreds of people – enthusiastic families shouting ‘REV IT!’ to all the cars – who were happy to respond.

A brief explanation of Decibels.
Sound exceeding 95 db can lead to permanent hearing loss. Pain begins at 125 db. Even brief exposure to 140 db can lead to immediate permanent damage.
The ‘Rev-Off’ has only one rule – ‘The Loudest Exhaust Wins’

The competing Supercars were spread around the lawns and, once the contest began, the cars who wished to be judged revved their engines to summon the judges. Simultaneous Revvers resulted in a mixed symphony that quickly whipped up the crowds - delighted to be involved.

Special mentions go to last years winner the green Lamborghini Gallardo (above) 126.9 db V10 Engine - outrageously loud but with a great range of notes and one of the judge’s favourites for the quality of sound.

Also a Dodge Viper GTS – Race Car 128.0 db V10 engine – This was a Monster … prompting the judges to warn the crowds to protect their children and cover their ears. Way past the threshold of pain it turned a whopping 128 db!

Memorable participants include the Lamborghini Diablo 127.3 db V12 engine – Who deserved an award for bravery with the engine bouncing off the rev-limiter, particles were expelled from the exhaust stinging the judges - who feared for the safety of the engine!

Also, the stunning Aston Martin One-77 only managed 120.5 db (V12 engine) – A sophisticated melody rose from this modern twelve cylinder engine. If there had been an award for sound quality and beauty this would have been the winner.

The closest sound to Formula One this day was the Porsche Carrera GT at 115.0 db V10 engine – The engine gave us shrieks, howls and gulps – only lacking ultimate volume. Knowing the previous scores, the owner cheerfully turned the stereo up to maximum to try to add to his number!
The prize for the loudest exhaust on the day went to a red Ferrari Enzo 129.0 db V12 engine – By far the most determined competitor having engineered a special exhaust to provide just maximum volume. And was it loud! Judged twice, one of the meters briefly showed 133 db – too close to the danger zone. This red Ferrari was a very popular winner – Lord Pembroke presented the ‘QuickSilver Exhausts Trophy’, a bulb-horn from a 1910 London Taxi, restored and engraved for the occasion.
The horn registered 105 db on the meter!
