What tires?
 

Hi,

I'm looking for 4 new tires for an AMV8. I really want the Pilot Super Sports but the sizes I want are 285/35/19 and 245/40/19, they don't seem to do the super sport in that size on the rear.

I was just wondering if there is an alternative tire that is as good but in the sizes I really want?

Bridgestone RE11. Had them on my V8V - very impressed. They are about as good as it gets, if you want a no compromises, high performance road tire. Definitely grippier than PSS, albeit less refined. And not far off an R compound, with a surprising tolerance for sustained track driving.

Tire's spinecho mentions are awesome! I have a Mustang and eat tires like mad!! I have fallen for the BFGoodrich KDW new tread design, have them on my car and there're amazing, I really have to force the rear loose in a corner compared to various other tires I've gone through/wasted..even tread life has surprised me after a few track/strip days

I've heard some ppl have a con with the KDW tire making a loud road noise, to be honest I couldn't verify that even if I tried, my exhaust makes so much noise I don't even bother with the radio anymore..hehe I make my own music :D

Good place I research tires is tirerack, good amount of reviews per brand/model..

I literally just put the Pilot Super Sports on my V8V 3 weeks ago.

Although the offset is minimal, the car drives like a dream...typical Michelin.

Tire Rack now lists Michelin Pilot Super Sports in 235/40/19 and 275/35/19 sizes where previously you had to pick something "close"

I really want the PSS but I want the 285/35/19 and 245/40/19.

I spoke to someone from Michelin earlier Today who said the 285 would be out in October, so it's not long to wait, but I have a road trip in September which will be around 1000 miles, and my tires really dont have much life left in them, so I am wondering whether it's worth waiting and risking it, or going for the narrower sizes??

Just a thought--if you haven't hit the "wear-bars" on your tires you'll be OK for 1,000 miles.

I am on the wear bars, the rear tyres probably have a few hundered miles left.

Does anyone know if a 275 Pilot Power Super Sport wider than a 275 RE050 that is on the car currently?

How do the Pilot Super Sports compare to the RE050?

There is no comparison between the RE050 and PSS, IMO. PSS is leagues ahead as a performance tire. RE050 is outdated and to boot, I thought it was a mediocre tire back in the day.

Just wish they did them in a 285 for the rear!!

For what it's worth, you also have the option of running 245/275 front/rear. This setup will dial out all the understeer and really help the car rotate more than any other setup. I had the 245-275 setup on my v8v in re050s and I loved it for what it's worth. It is the least understeer setup option possible on stock wheels.

That was an option I was thinking of but I was worried that I may have problems due to the rolling radius not being the same?

OK, I've been looking at the Goodyear Asymmetric 2's, they get fantastic reviews.

The issue is they come in a 285/35 for the rear, but not a 245/40 for the front.

Would I see any issues going for a Pilot Super Sport in a 245/40 at the front and a Asymmetric 2 in a 285/35 on the rear? Both tires get very similar reviews, and both seem like excellent tires. Will it make the car handle poorly mixing odd fronts to rears? I don't mind a bit of oversteer, prefer it to understeer anyway!

@SamJL, I put a set of Continental DW on my DB9 about a year ago in the sizes that you're looking for (285/35/19 and 245/40/19). They're a very good tire, though (according to reviews) not quite as good as the Michelin PSS that I wanted. I'm happy with them and they work well for the kind of driving I do. The only fault I've found is that they sometimes feel a bit "loose" on heavily grooved pavement at 60+ mph.
