Platform Sharing -- Mercedes says it's interested
Exactly what I'm afraid of.
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/de...in-partnership It suggests that the rumored SUV is just one thing that could be "included" in platform sharing. It does say there are no such plans yet. Yet... Appalling.  :( |
A bit vague
There have been discussions for knocking on 2 years about using the GL for the AML SUV I can't see AM dropping VH any time soon |
I'd expect AML to source more than just an engine and electronics from M-B if they're going to push forward with building an SUV. Developing a new vehicle unique from the company's existing model range will be very costly, and I wouldn't think AML could go it alone.

Inside the auto companies this method of creating supplemental market entries is known as "badge engineering".

They are considering platform sharing for an SUV...who cares? You are getting fired up over rumors and speculation of an SUV you probably wouldn't buy in the first place, bespoke or not.
If anything, this might bring brand awareness to new demographics and possibly make AM money like it did for Porsche. More funds = better development = win for everyone. On a side note, my wife loves the new Porsche Macan and we're seriously considering buying it. Yes it's just an Audi, but the Porsche touches on top take it from "it's ok" to "I want". We'll see if it's the next Cayenne but it's minimal cost to Porsche. |
