odd noise on 70k mile Vantage

Driving down my lane and to the main road is about 3/4 mile to stop sign. Pulling away clicking noise, like a valve tap commenced increasing and decreasing with speed. Stopped and revved engine no noise so I assumed not oil pump or valve. Pulled away and clicking turn to a whine and again varied with speed. Began to think it was a stick or twig, as my lane is through the woods, against the rotor. Did not abate after 5 miles. Stopped reversed to back around and noise disappeared. Anyone else experience anything remotely similar? Ay input or advice would be greatly appreciated

Does it do it over a certain speed, or does it stop after several clicks?

My right rear wheel bearing is going bad, new one on order. It clicks when starting from a stop in both forward and reverse gears. Goes away after a bit, but does it every time when I move from a stop. Could that be your problem, too?

telum,
I had a similar clicking sound on my V12V, I could only hear it at very low speeds (below 5mph). The dealer performed repair order: "SB0299" and it went away. It sounded like something to do with lubricating the half-shafts/ rear axle. The sound went away after that.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll call the dealership on Monday and ask about that. If that fixes it, I'm happy! And at least I've got a spare on the shelf just in case...

I'm pretty positive WG_moots is on the right track for you. Anytime you a hear a clicking sound 90% of the time it has to do with the half shafts. Inspect the half shaft boots for tears. If any tears are present, the grease has probably leaked out and usually a replacement is in order.

Yes usually such sounds are related to either driveshaft/half shafts. On our cars bc the carbon "torque tune" (aka drive shaft) is protected by a bell housing that rules out driveshaft being a culprit so half shafts is only remaining option.

Had same sound happen on my m3, ended up being driveshaft coupler.

Another possibility is wheel bearing if it's more of a whine, but you would be getting a bit of wheel play with that.

Determined the culprit was a branch that got wedged and was clicking as it hit a wheel weight. I absolutely know not how it got to where it did and doubt it could happen again, but you never know...

Thanks for the great info, guys! I took my car into the dealership today and had it checked out. They said it looked fine, and that it didn't even need greasing or the Service Bulletin or anything. Soooo I've got a few hundred bucks worth of spare wheel bearing/hub assembly sitting on the shelf in my garage. Oh well, the techs said my car is good to go for the track and that's what matters!
