Drive line thunk
Hello All,
I have an 06 V8 Vantage form Germany with 35K miles. Sometimes when shifting from reverse to first I will hear a deep "thunk" sound from the transmission. It will happen from time to time when shifting from second to first when slowing down and almost stopped. It feels like there is possibly some slack in the transmission. I'm in Louisiana and the closest AM dealer/shop is in Huston Tx. We have a local exotic mechanic here, but he doesn't see a lot of Astons here. I'm not sure if anyone else is or has experienced this. Is this a problem with early Vantages? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Let’s assume you had an old Chevy and it developed a drive line “clunk”
The mechanic would put it on the lift and check the following:
Driveshaft universal joints.
Play or slack in the differential
Problems in the transmission.
Well, those steps have not changed, only the cars have changed. You still have to check those items, but now it’s much more difficult.
The torque tube and transaxle have to be removed and examined. Start at the clutch (unlikely) and then the torque tube driveshaft assembly then the transaxle.
My guess is the transaxle, but either way there are no shortcuts.

Mine does something similar but I have never thought much about it, just assumed it was normal. This only happens in D mode, paddle shifts are silent. It usually happens in D mode coming to a stop from 2nd to 1st. I usually use paddle shifters so forgot about it.
Any good mechanic can do an inspection to determine of you have loose or worn components.
