Dealer (Mclaren Houston) sold out DBS from under me....

Been a while since I’ve owned an Aston...have owned 3 prior (V8V Nurburgring edition, Casino Royale DBS, V12VS). I miss the DBS and started hunting for one. I found a 2010 white DBS with 2500 miles on it asking about $115k.
Finally found one at Mclaren Houston, made an offer, and they accepted - salesperson (Jim) sends me a congratulations email.
I call him the next day and he says someone else bought it for asking.
I was never given the opportunity to even counter or told there was another buyer....just sold from under me. Didn’t think Mclaren Houston, an exotic dealer would do this ....for a measly $4k.
Heppened to anyone?

Same thing happened to me on a 2012 SLK 55 at Napleton in Chicago.

Thats a shame. I hope you find another one! It will be nice to add another AM to the SoCal group.

Bad business. Period. When I bought my car (in FL, I live in CO) the dealer took a deposit from me in to take the car off the market until I could get down there to do paperwork.

r11rs 02-01-2019 10:34 PM

Had a dealer try and sell a 911 to someone else after a deposit and signed agreement!

Viper98912 02-02-2019 05:36 AM

Did you put a deposit on the car? If no, then you really had no claim to the car. Someone came in before you with money in hand and could leave with the car that day. There's risk for them if you don't show up with money or have financing problems.

If yes, then yes they did you wrong.

Oh yeah, money talks. I've had this happen before as well. Can't get too upset, these are car dealers after all.

Same here. It should be "I'll take it, here's my CC card number" and then settle up a day or two later with a wire or loan paperwork. The dealership lost a customer over a 4K. They could've called him to say there was another offer and give him a chance to make 6K+.

I think it depends on the dealer. When I bought my car, I dealt with the sales manager directly from the first day. He didn’t ask for a deposit but I specifically told him that I did not want this to sell from under me.

Ron Avery 02-02-2019 11:53 AM

Same with me, when I purchased my 2016 GT. I had already purchased my 2007 Vantage from them 2 years earlier.
I delt with my salesman and the maniger. They held the car until I drove over that day. It was a 50 minute drive.
althogh I doubt any one els was interested in the car, it had been on the lot for 6 months.

I use to date a gal who worked at the local Porsche, BMW, MB and Volvo dealership. She told me her mother said to her that no matter what they say, what they do or how much money they make, they are still car salesman. I have always remembered that because they are still car salesmen.

Which worked, because, I drove to the dealership in Atlanta to buy your car and they wouldn't sell it to me. lol.

They told me you did the deal a coupe of hours before I got there.

Is was/is a nice car.

No matter the end result, unless you have some type of personal relationship with a Brand Manager, Finance Manager, or General Manager, no dealer will hold something with absolute certainty unless there is a deposit and something in writing. As we know and has been mentioned above, if someone comes along to take that car home that day, they will sell immediately really no matter the profit margin.

Dealers:
1. Get car X sold as soon as possible
2. Depending on the sales person, they dont know all the information about each specific car. (typically you get "I am fairly new so I have to look it up also"
3. Finance person even knows less about each car, other than what they try to sell on top of the vehicle
4. Each person at the dealer typically has some sort of story they tell all customers to make thier product better than all the others." best line is: we have two people coming to look at it tomorrow"
5. After sales: some are good and treat you like a possible future customer, most treat you like your wasting thier time, now that you have bought something already
6. USED CAR: scratches, possible dings, nicked windscreen etc...... Even at 200k they dont really care, its used so there should be marks and such---that surprised me the most of all the work I do for various dealers. I complained on my RRS at 56k that the windscreen had a wiper end gouge on passenger side---response by them---its used, it should have cosmetic issues. I had already signed paperwork. DONT BUY A CAR WHEN ITS RAINING EVER----you will miss things.

7. Dealer opinon on swirls, scratches ------- we will have it buffed before you take it home.
8. Ceramic coatings ----- We use X product and alll the painted surfaces will be coated---10yr warranty. They leave on the table, trim, wheels, multiple coats. Items that could really benefit the customer, however the customer will never know that because the detailer and customer never meet.

Rant over

Yes, I wish they would have just asked for a deposit but I wasn’t given a chance at all.
You’re right, perhaps I would have paid even mire than the guy who bought from under me.
I‘m just surprised there was absolutely No communication. Really is bad business.
Oh well, on to the next

What are your specs? I'll keep a lookout for you.

Happened to my few weeks ago when I was buying a f430. Offer accepted, and went to go pay 2 days later and sold.

My motto is always, first with money gets the car.

Thanks for the lookout...I ended up picking up a Morning Frost white DBS at Marshall Goldman, pretty much similar to the one I was looking at originally.
I guess lesson is, if serious, pay deposit....
great to be back in an Aston. This is my 4th one.

Now I’m considering an exhaust....anyone familiar with or have Velocity AP?

Sounds like a great pickup congrats!

Im in the process of installing the VAP power pack on my DBS, it currently has a Quicksilver Supersport backbox (which sounded great by itself), but looking forward to hearing and driving it after the tune/headers/high flow cats etc.... I’ll post up some info when it’s complete.

Awesome, congrats! Hopefully we’ll see you at the meet on the 9th!

I actually just finished my custom exhaust last week and love it. Currently this is the only video I have recorded of it:
