I'm pretty ignorant about Audi's

I have always hated them basically because of their reliability and the fact they never made a worth while road car. When I was down @ Sebring I was able to check out their new line of cars in the Audi tent. I've seen the R8 around and I'm honestly not impressed. For the money I just feel there are much better alternatives. I did however like the evolution of the Audi TT. They had the RS model of it I think. Anyways, I was pretty impressed when I sat in the Audi RS4 and saw the redline was @ 8K rpms. I know it's a 4.2l V8 with 420hp and tons of torque. But I will say I was very surprised with the redline, this must mean they have done some developing over the years with their engine. Can someone just give me a basic overview of the power plant in the RS4? I know it's DOHC, do they use variable valve timing and lift? My guess is yes, I've seen an illustration of Audi's offering of that. Anyways anything else I should know about this engine? I'm honestly going to go test drive one. I don't think I'll ever buy one but I think I will be in for a surprise since the last Audi I drove was my friends 02 (I think) S4.

The RS4 is a masterpiece. It has a 4.2 V8 with a redline of 8250 rpm. It has a the fastest mean piston speed of any production engine in the world. It has 420hp and 317 ft/lbtq right through the rev band. It does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, 1/4 in 12.6@110mph and does the skid pad .94g's. It also did the Nurburiing Track in 7:53, faster than the M3, M5, Gallardo, 996 911 Turbo, Corvette Z06 and some other high end cars. It is truly the best car i have ever owned. It has 8 piston brembo brakes, racing recaro seats, CF Trim, DVD Nav, Valved Exhaust, 19" Rims. It is truly sick. Just to warn you, if you drive one, you will buy one.

Don't think I'll ever own one, how much does this beast weight? What do you mean by fastest mean piston speed? I'm assuming it has a shorter stroke which in turn = faster piston speeds? What is the Bore x Stroke?

Thanks

The speed of the piston is the fastest among all production engines. At the track full weight with 3/4 tank of has and me in it (240lbs) it weighed 3893lbs.

Its a nice car but lets not get carried away with the performance times. An RS4 does not run 0-60 in 4.1 (4.6 is closer to the truth) and the fastest claimed times posted at nurburgring that i have seen published for an RS4 is 7:58 and 8:09.

So basically it has a great engine. Don't like the Bore x Stroke ratio on it but it seems by result it performs very well. So Audi finally made a legit chassis (R8), threw this engine in it, and it's over $100K? Not cool. I've never really been a fan of sedans, I've always hated Mercedes, I like the authentic sports car and the passion for racing. This car seems legit but I don't like their approach. I'm sure it's a great daily driver, I'm going to go take a look at one out of curiosity. The R8, might be a good buy if it depreciates in value like other Audi's, but due to the nature of it, I doubt it. Plus Audi hasn't proven anything in the way of reliability. Even on the track, look what happened at Sebring, Audi's reign is over haha.

I've seen a 1/4mi in the 12.8-13.2 range, which is respectable. I'm a little skeptical of the Nurburgring claim, is there a link to this?

Not to knock too hard on the R8, but two questions:

Why did they go with those hideous looking panels on the rear quarter panel, by the intake vents?

Why did they feel the need to go with the Christmas lights look under the main headlight in the headlamp assembly.

Don't believe a word these guys say... 99% of all RS4's are 1.8T A4's with body kits and different badging.

:D

Aesthetic choices to contribute to the "futuristic" feel of the car, and to distinguish it from it's rivals I suppose.

BMW has the angel eyes, so I suppose audi thought it needed the eyebrow type lights to set itself apart. While definitely not for everyone, I commend them on making something that looks like no other exotic. I happen to love it, but can definitely see why some might not. Different strokes for different folks is what makes a nice and diverse lineup of performance cars.

Yeah it's a nice car and all, I guess there usually are a couple things I don't like about every car. I'm sure it's a blast to drive. I'd personally go with a GT3 RS, but the R8 is legit. I need to make more money, I've found there are a lot of tight cars in that 75K-150K range.

Ya think so eh? hilarious

All of this Audi bashing and you drive an ugly, phalic looking, oil burning, crappy gas mileaged, no torque having, chic car RX-8?

Tommy6030 Mar 26, 2008 08:21 AM

Wow...I can't even comment on some of his posts
