Inconel is a nickel-cobalt based super alloy that has exceptionally high yield, tensile, fatigue, and stress rupture strength in high temperature environments. It also has excellent corrosion resistance, all of which are favorable for this application. There's a reason F1 cars' choice exhaust material is Inconel. It also has good weldability. It's more dense than 300 series CRES (both are also FCC/austenitic), but can be made much thinner (walled) because of its superior strength; so the hardware ends up being lighter than a comparable CRES part.

In a nutshell it's pretty much half the weight of steel, not as light as titanium, but it's high heat resistant.

It's one of the best metal for exhaust but it's expensive to manufacture like op stated. I'm not sure about headers but my eisenmann inconel exhaust for my m3 hasn't discolored over years of use.
