Bentley Continental GT/GTC/Flying Spur DIY Thread

I am trying to start a collection of DIY articles in this site, regarding the Continental GT/GTC/Flying Spur AWD models.

Hopefully, members will contribute and post their own Bentley DIY's or even Bentley DIY's from other forums, only if the links to those DIY's are inactive (you can post a link as inactive by unchecking the "automatically parse links in text" box that is just below the text box, before you submit the post).

It is also possible to just copy and paste the DIY from another forum as well.

Let's try to build this into something......Geo.

P.S. Many thanks to GT3 Chuck, for all his advice.

Scan Tools

From my research it appears that VAG COM (PC only system scan tool, but said to be the equal of the factory scan tool) will work on all Continental GT/GTC/Flying Spur models as most control modules are Audi, Volkswagen.

A very clever hand-held scan tool which is compatible with the Bentley :

Rear Brakes

A great contribution from John, elsewhere on this forum explaining method to release Bentley rear calipers :

Engine Related

Engine is basically the VW Phaeton W12, with addition of twin turbochargers.

It should be possible to cross-reference parts, from the VW/Audi parts bin.

I'm going to try to get a list started.......Geo.

W12 oil filter element : Mann Evotop HU 932/6x
W12 Engine oil : Fully Synthetic 0W-40 (i.e. Mobil1)
Front Brake Pads : Delphi # LP 1002 or Ferodo # FDB 1001 or Mintex # MDB 1746 (L=195mm x H=74mm x T=20mm used on Audi RS4 2000-2001 and Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG 1997-2001)
Rear Brake Pads : Ferodo # FDB 1672 (L=139.6mm x H=67.8mm x T=17mm used on BMW M5 E60/E61 and BMW M6 E64)
Front Brake Rotors : 15.9" x 1.4" Alcon
Rear Brake Rotors : 13.2" x 0.9" Alcon (from Audi RS6)

If I have made any mistakes, please let me know and I will correct......Geo.

Starter Motor

It appears starter motor replacement requires "engine out" procedure, but there may be a "workaround"......Geo.

W12 Oil and Filter Change Procedure

For W12 oil and filter change on a VW Phaeton (basically the same engine as in the Bentley), check this out :

Resetting Service Light
1. Ensure the ignition is switched off.
2. Hold down the trip button.
3. Switch the ignition on and release the trip button.
4. A message appears in the DIP with the wording SERVICE RESET .
5. Press the OK button on the steering wheel.
6. The message will now disappear.
7. To check the procedure has worked correctly. Switch the ignition off, switch the ignition back on again. The service warning light should have disappeared.

PDF File Available for Download

I have created a PDF file with much more Bentley info, parts cross-references, images and links added, but at 2.8 Mb it is too large to display here.

Hence, I have placed the file at the top of my own web site (see link below), where forum users can have access for download.

I am an avid Bentley fan, and hope to own one in the near future. However, I want to know more about DIY maintenance on those wonderful cars, before I take the plunge.

Please let me know if I have made any errors, or if you have more to add. I hope this may stimulate Bentley owners to contribute.

Awesome article - just awesome!

Would anyone know if there are any upgraded rotor options besides moving to a Brembo system?

Geo3 08-28-2010 02:45 PM

Anyone with info to add?.........Geo.

This info apply to the Can spec '04 CON GT that i m working on
Front Brake Pads: 3W0698151A, only from Bentley$$$$$$$ OUCH!!!!!!!
Rear Brake Pads: Textar #2332603 (OE#3D0698451A) used on VW Phaeton
By looking at the pics from the DIY of the brake parts removed & the figures of the brake pads, the difference r quite obvious. still learn alot from the DIY though. 2 THUMBS UP!!!

kudos for you to be so enthusiastic about working on the bentley. it's one of my favorite GT car.

one of the reason i didn't buy a CGT is because the car is so DIY unfriendly. i mean, doing a brake job that requires a VAG is just ridiculous. you must really love working on it (to put up with it)!
