If you're into numerology...

Our licence plates have 6 figures: 3 are alphabetic and 3 are numbers. The combinations are extensive and the chance of meeting a plate with, say, one number or letter away are fairly remote.

So how about this for amazing coincidence...

My old CGT ended in 98
My new CGT ends in 998
My wife's Lexus ends in 998

And less obvious...
My Merc plate ends in 688

These are government issued, so the choice comes from the universe! :)

The number 8 is a powerful number. Chinese believe the number to be powerful, lining up with prosperity, fortune and wealth. Or if you are a well to do Hollywood type, Scientology's book Technique 88.

The Chinese dentist in our street has 888 plates. Amazing how a sophisticated culture - even us in the Western world too - can reply so heavily on mysticism. As a sceptical journalist I don't believe in any form of number mumbo jumbo, but if the belief is powerful enough it can truly make dramatic changes in people's lives.

As for my case, it's just a happy coincidence. I haven't made any more money by knowing it :p

As I wrote the reply above, I thought of the topics I've been taught to avoid in polite conversion: beliefs, sex and money. So I stuffed up on two of them - apologies if I offended any Scientologists!

Oh, I broke the other rule I've lived by: never explain and never complain.

Great start to the day :(

Just wait until you talk to stock/fx/etc traders about Mercury Retrograde.... And for the record, my ex was BIG TIME into those things and had a business around it.

There is a great Dim Sum restaurant overhere named 888 Seafood. It's good and always, always packed. An earnest and true belief can changed the world.:)
