how to replace both temp sensors on bentley continental gt 2005

OK, the front sensor is at front right of the car, looking at it direct on. it is more or less just behind the n/s front light, on the underneath the main radiator pipe coming out of radiator. I removed the front cover plate with the 12 screws just for ease of access, popped the main radiator pipe clip and pulled it back to gain access to sensor. Then simple remove and fit new one.

The rear is tight at the back of the engine (under the small bentley plastic cover that pops off at centre of rear of the engine covers), but it is at the top. removed a small vacuum pipe above it for ease of access. Then popped the clip securing old temp sensor and removed it. Fitted new sensor, The clip that holds it in is the pain, but after a few attempts, I got it in. Lost one clip, so get a extra spare one just in case.

Do not forget to clear codes

I could have done this job in half hour, nothing major to remove.

Which codes were thrown and what symptoms did you get that made you replace both sensors ?

heathrow99 04-20-2019 08:02 AM

I had eml light on, and codes P0118 COOLANT TEMP SENSOR SIGNAL HIGH SENSOR 1 and U02080 COOLANT TEMP SENSOR SIGNAL TOO HIGH

Secondary codes P1923

It was probably only one sensor, but it is best to replace both.

Do these sensors also control the cooling fans? Mine aren’t working and engine overheats, but cars usually have a sendor for the ECU and a separate binary switch for the fans

Very possible, I would for the cost and time to do, replace both of them first, even to eliminate these. I guess you have checked fuses and relays already? have you tested fan with direct connection

Fan speeds and on/off are controlled entirely through the ECUs. The ECU decides if fans are needed based on several inputs, ECT being a primary one. Others are RPM, barametric input, speed, gear position, etc. The fans do not run independently of ECU control, or the EMS. In other words, they are incapable of running outside the EMS protocols.

Here is another recent thread related to cooling fans:

Fault codes are a good start, if you can collect them and post.

please help

Hello, I have the P0118 fault code showing and bought a couple of new sensors.
I have fitted the the front one on the radiator hose but cannot find the one at the back of the engine.
Is it the exact same part, as I am looking for the same unit 06A919501A and cannot see it anywhere.

Thanks

Martin, it is hard to see, and is exact same sensor as the front one. Centre of engine, follow to right at the back, you will see various small hoses and you should see the top of the sensor just under those hoses

its same fitment as front one, space is very tight, but achievable without taking anything off, i lost the holding clip, so make sure you have a spare handy.
