Continental GT Power Trunk Doesn't Stay Open on First Open
 

When I open my power trunk, it gets to the point where it will hold open, but when the motor stops, the stopping or holding mechanism doesn't seem to latch. The trunk then slowly closes and latches.

But if I open it again, it opens and holds open just fine. And will do so until I leave it for a while. Too long (hour, maybe?) and it needs to open twice again to hold.

Any ideas?

This is no "latching mechanism" that holds the trunk lid in the upright position, it is the hydraulic pistons that hold it up, and when they start to fail (get weak) it will drop, but if you lift it a few times in a row they will build pressure and hold for a while, but that will only last so long, mostly shows up in cold weather.

Wow thanks! Exactly what I was hoping- as the trunk motor prices aren't cheap but the struts aren't bad. And you're dead on about the weather- I got my car in the summer and we've had our first bought of cold weather here in Chicago.

Yes, definitely down to strut failure, been there, done that. The replacement struts WILL fix your problem.

Just bought new struts for my trunk and my front hood, they all went soft at the exact same time as the weather got cold.

Not particularly cold here but I've been having a similar problem for awhile. When I open it from inside the car it will go up and then slam shut. Only happens once in awhile but I've also noticed that when up I can still raise it a few more inches by hand. I suspected struts but this me confirmation. Thanks!

Just found a pair for $79 delivered with a lifetime warranty from Lift Support Depot. Same price from them direct or through Amazon or Walmart.

Looking further, they have the same ones with only a 1 yr warranty - same specs otherwise on the Lift Support Depot site - for $29 a pair. Worth a shot. They'll be here Wednesday so I'll post results then.

I got the ones from Amazon but they were too long. Have to reorder.

I ordered the Bentley OEM ones off Ebay for the trunk and hood. Expensive, but I figured they'd fit. "topeuromachine" was the seller. I had them delivered to my independent to install them with my CV boot and exhaust coupling.

I pick up the car tomorrow, I hope the struts were worth it and hold the trunk and hood open.

Funny story: you should have seen me try to figure out how to open the hood the first time I tried. I had to open the car manual from the glovebox.

My trunk acts a fool in so many ways.

First of all, my key FOB has the wireless reach of a beacon inside Fort Knox. I can sometimes stand directly behind the car and press the "Trunk Open" button and it won't open. I can have the key IN MY PANTS POCKET SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT and the car says "Key not found"...

So I press the boot button to open the trunk, and sometimes it will go up about 75% of the way, and then go directly back down again. Sometimes it stops 75% of the way up. I can always pull it up way higher than where it actually stops.

Oh, and speaking of going back down again, it has never yet once fully closed by itself. Either it will try to close and get very close to the end, but then hesitate and go back up again, or it will close with the front right corner 2 cm above flush. I always have to help press the trunk down myself in order to get it to shut all the way. (Looks quite odd in the parking lot to have to assist the trunk lid up & down when you're driving a Bentley... :) )

I also have the weak key fob issue and fitting new batteries doesn't seem to help. Never had an issue starting the car, but I have to stand with the fob almost touching the door or boot to get the switches to work. And every once in a while when I lock the car the alarm goes off. Never a dull moment with this Beast.

Have you replaced the key fob battery? That should help with the range. Try putting a charger on the car's batteries overnight to see if that helps with the closing. Replacing the struts as discussed above should solve the dropping problem. The struts pop right off with a tap of a rubber mallet or even just the palm of your hand and pop back on the same way. Literally a two minute job. Use a stick (an umbrella works!) to support the lid when replacing the struts.
