Buying a 2018 Bentayga W12. Anything to watch out for? Qs about brakes & battery

Hey guys, I'm a couple days away from signing on the dotted line for a 2018 Bentayga W12 Signature with 12k miles. Will be my first Bentley. Had a couple of questions I was hoping someone might know the answers to. Thanks in advance!

1. Brake Pads
The dealer selling the car has told me "the brake pad measurements came in at 8mm in the front and 6mm in the rear -- very close to new condition." Was just wondering if anyone could confirm that 8mm left in front and 6mm left in rear is indeed a lot of life left? Anyone know what the brake pad measurements are new / what percentage of life that means is remaining? Given it's a heavy car, I would assume the brake pads probably only last 15-20k miles? Anyone recommend any aftermarket brake pads for the Bentayga?

2. Battery
How often do the batteries need to be replaced? Does this car have two (main and starting batteries) or just the one under the front passenger floor? Will the car warn you when the battery health is getting low or will it just go dead one day? Should I just replace both batteries on it now as precautionary since I assume they're 5 years old and are the original batteries onboard (it was built 2/2018)?

3. Other
  • What are the best windshield wipers to buy (front and rear) and sizes please if you have them?
  • Anywhere online to buy a touch up paint pen for the silver front lip? (The piece indicated with the yellow arrows below)

Hello @981WC ,
I would ask the dealership to reconfirm the measurements, and explain their comment of "very close to new condition", as according to my searches online, the fronts new are 16mm, therefore 8mm left = 50% worn, whereas the rears are 17mm new, so 6mm left is closer to 68% worn.

The 50% and 68% worn figures are if you were to run the pads to 0mm, which of course you would not, you would want to replace them somewhere around 2 - 3 mm, if not 4mm, so the "new condition" comment is way off.

Is there a chance that you have the measurements switched for front and rear, as having the rear worn more than the front is a bit odd, and raises a flag for me as to mileage, like it's gone through a set of front pads already, and the rears are original.

It also would help to know the type of brake rotor/pad setup, standard vs CC.

Johnny

Thanks, Johnny. Yes, the figures have me wondering, too. I believe it's the standard brake setup. I've attached the spec sheet. I don't mind getting the brake pads replaced. I'm assuming it's 2-3 hours in labor and I can probably find a new set of pads online for a few hundred bucks?

The standard brakes are cast iron rotors and I do not see the CC listed in the options on the window sticker you provided. I believe the CC are only available as an option on the Speed model. BTW that is not the original Window Sticker for the car, which would contain more information.

You should be able to obtain the full vehicle specification from the dealer (if Bentley) or by e-mailing to the following
To: contactbentley@contact.bentleymotors.com
Subject: Full Build Specification Document For SCBCXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Within the build document for my 2020 Conti GT, it clearly spells out the brakes (as well as everything else in the vehicle), something good to have if you purchase the vehicle,

Cast Iron Front Disc Brakes, 420x40mm, Black (BAV 1ZE)
Cast Iron Rear Disc Brakes, 380x30mm, Black (BAH 2EM)
