N54 is vamoose. N55 takes over

Just read this official type document, sounds like we can kiss the N54 goodbye. Boy racers who claim their 335i is faster then an M3 beware! hilarious

Time will tell. I suspect the tuners will find plenty of potential in the new version.

503Alex 01-29-2010 03:23 PM

The N54 is retained on the "is" models and the Z4.

mcr_driver 01-30-2010 08:16 PM

was just about to say what 503alex said...i wonder how more reliable the n55 engine will be in comparison to the n54...will we still get the same headaches or have they learned from their lessons?

m3bs 01-30-2010 08:19 PM

Probably the same HPFP. That's the only reliability "issue" I'm aware of.

mcr_driver 01-30-2010 08:55 PM

HPFP stands for high pressure fuel pump correct? i wonder how the newer turbo will handle boost once the tuners get their hands on it...

m3bs 01-30-2010 09:03 PM

Correct.

We'll have to see about the N55. I have no idea how the flow capacity of the new single turbo compares with the N54 twin setup.

Wrong it is also in the new 740i and Li

From what I am told and what I know it should be better but the bigest reason for going to a single turbo was cost. The twin turbo motor cost a lot more money to produce than any of the estimates BMW was originally working with.

Good to know in addition to what I said.

what about all the carbon issues for knock faults and injectors causing mass misfires? N54's have been anything but a good engine so far... at least here in the southwest.

Hopefully. BMS has a 135i due in March with the new engine so he'll have his work cut out for him.

Dunno I owned two 335's never had a problem.. both tuned and 1 had over 54k when I got the other one. To me the N54 is one of the best engines ever made. Hence the awards.

Single turbo on an Inline-6 is the way to go.

Roland H. 02-07-2010 03:03 AM

The N55 was introduced to lower heat output, increase reliability, and also as an effort to stifle the tuners from getting into it as fast as they did with the N54. By going single turbo, BMW can lock down the engine more securely which should make things more difficult for after-market suppliers to supply products/tuning.

Pretty smart move on their part.
