I would stay away from the '04-'05 M5's.

PS OP: There was never an '04 or '05 M5. E39 ended in '03 (V8 400hp) and the E60 (V10 500hp) started in '06.

Sorry, I was kiddding. As mentioned above, the e39 M5 ended production in 2003 which had the S62 V8 engine, 6 speed manual, etc. The e60 body S85 V10, SMG, etc. started as a 2006 model year. I have had an e39 M5 for 5 years, extensively modded, daily driver and it's been an incredible car. I can't comment much on the e60's.

He should definitely buy an 04 or 05. I have never heard of any breaking down. EVER
