Fake M5 Engine Note!

Since you guys are usually in the know quicker than me, you may have heard this....so this might be a repost.
I was so shocked I had to post it.

I'm reading the latest Automobile Magazine article on the new M5 and it says the engineers used a recorded engine note, which the computers play through the speakers into the cabin when you hit the gas. The reason? They made the cabin so quiet the engine sound couldn't get through and they felt that buyers would want to hear it.
They tried several different methods before coming up with the recorded sound fix.

I am shocked to hear this. What's the world coming to when fake sound is better than the real deal?

The writer said they were shocked but after driving the car, they thought it sounded pretty good and let it go. What's next, fake burnouts? Fake power slides?

I read this too. Not really feeling the new M5 :/

Yeah I think BMW has lost it's way. The new M5 with turbo's and lag instead of the screaming V10 from the last model? If that wasn't bad enough they made it so quiet and serene that fake engine sound had to be piped in through the speakers! Get real.

oh no. they did the mustang thing. hopefully thats something the coding vendors will fix.

I didn't know the Mustang did this too. But a Mustang can't be as insulated as a Bimmer, can it?

this is funny , BMW has gone to sh1t with its m division. with the exception is the 1.

they lost their way ,they look horrible , nothing aggressive about them, looks like a ok powered car for the mid life crisis ,middle aged guys.

and the new m5 is fugly!

yeah the new gen stang they just brought out has something the same. idk if it plays through speakers or it has a single speaker for it. the articles didn't really get into details.

one of the code venders will change this, i have faith. i love how the new 5 drives and looks. the interior is a big improvement from last gen. i give it 2 thumbs up so far. to fail a car just on exhaust is a little ricey to me, but thats just my couple lincolns.

I have a 2012 GT and it dosn't play engine sounds via the speakers. There is a tube running threw the firewall and into the cabin that allows more noise from the engine to make its way inside. The car has tons of insulation and such as to reduce outside noise.

I don't know why BMW didn't do something like that instead. Engine noise from speakers... wtf.

TR3VOR 11-15-2011 04:00 PM

i personally would like to have a can in the engine compartment and a can in the cabin with a string attached to eachother. thats probably the best way. lol

blarko 11-18-2011 12:10 AM

It is bs, you can take out a fuse to take out the fake sounds

scarab440 11-20-2011 05:48 PM

I don't have a problem piping actual engine acoustics into the cabin. Playing a recording would just be silly though.

I guess for those who where thinking about getting the new m5 your going to have to do some carpet pulling and removal of sound damping material. That or learn to live with the 5.1 replica of engine noise LOL

Interesting there were many people upset about the last genereation of Bangle bimmers but they still sold well. I have a feeling that even with this quiet and serene M5 with fake engine note, it will sell. There are many non-enthusiasts who don't care about things that enthusiast care about. Even some enthusiasts might buy it. Nothing surprises me anymore.
