I had an E46 M3 with the SMG tranny (single-clutch). Only thing I liked about it was its rawness...everything else I couldn't stand. DCTs lose the rawness and are a lot more refined. I think the Porsche PDK is one of the best DCTs out. If you're in doubt, go with a manual.

The article does make a good point...the M5 is built around the DCT. I read somewhere that while the manual is more engaging, it just isn't suited to the rest of the car. Not sure if it would ruin the experience for you or not though.

exactly as chillar15 nailed it on the head.. If you didn't like it on the Porsche, you're more likely not gonna enjoy it on the M5. The M5 was built around it. I've driven both the 6speed and DCT and enjoy the DCT a bit more (and I'm a manual guy). The 6speed belongs in the M3 as it's lighter and more raw to drive. Depends what you're going to use the car for as well. Im not saying that the 6speed is out of the question, go drive both offerings and see which you like better!
