One of the more often neglected systems on modern engines, crankcase ventilation parts must be functioning properly for a host of engine operations to take place.

When the separator fails, you will begin to see a large increase in the overall vacuum in the engine crankcase. In the most extreme cases, the air-oil separator fails to separate the oil from the air, and oil is then sucked into the intake manifold. The oil is then burned up in the combustion process, producing grey/blue smoke in the exhaust.
