Talking New to Boxster

Hello

I have been reading these forums for some time, and now I decided to actively participate. I own a 2002 Boxster S with almost 70k miles on it. It is my daily driver, therefore it has to be street-legal (live in the SF Bay Area).

I am strongly considering taking it to a DE event to see what it's about. I also want to slightly tune the car.

My greatest concern with this is the cost involved, in particular in regard to tires and brake pads. Can anyone give me some pointers as to how many events could these components endure ? Also, if I participate in these events, is the engine expected to wear out faster ?

Sorry, I realize there are many questions. I hope to get to know many of you around.

Welcome and congratulation . You don't need to change a thing to attend your first or several DE's . You will need to have your brake pads and rotors checked to make sure they are in good condition, if you have not done so, change your oil, tires should have tread on them. other than that you won't need a thing. Now, if and when, the bug bites you and you feel you are ready for your next step then check back with us or do some of your own research and the fun really begins.
Go to the DE, have fun, the instructors there will keep you out of harms way and you will go home with a big grin on your face.

Enjoy your car
Harry

It was recommended to me to put in high performance break fluid, which for an all day event I think is wise. If the bug does bite you may need to think twice about lowering the car in SF!
Enjoy.

Many thanks to all. Indeed I have been doing a bit of reading, and it is getting interesting.

As far as modding my car, my intention is to eventually do it, but I guess the fun is to first realize what the current limitations are, and then improve from there. If I were to install all the performance upgrades right away, I would not really realize how much is changed. In addition, I'd like to work on the car myself if I could.

As far as lowering the car, I am lucky that I live and work in the peninsula area. I try not to even go to SF with this car, as the streets are not in such good shape...

thanks again !

congrats...!! and welcome to 6speed.. out of the box the Boxster S is already a great handling car.. if youre lowering since you have 70miles i suggest doing coilovers or replacing your shocks if youre going with springs.. with that some nice wheels and exhaust you would be good.. there's also a weekly meet in Santana Row, if you feel like hanging out with some of us local folks.. there should be a thread here about it...

Congrats Mcfly. I am new here too, picked up my Boxster S at the end of May.

alex911S: How does lowering a car affect its handling? I want to lower mine by about an inch to about the same ride level as a Spyder, but I heard that the Spyders have different camber setting as well. Should I do both? Does it require a camber kit to do so? Mine has less than 4000km on the car so replacing the springs should be good? What advantage does coilover has over just lowering spring other than adjustability?

Sounds good. I like the looks (and handling) of a lowered suspension, however I don't think I'll do it at this point. I heard about the Santana Row thing, I will join at some point.

best
