Have you considered our system?

It sounds killer at full throttle while still keeping a mellow, civil sound for when you are driving around town.

Take a peek at this video we made of our system in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHSdqW2cVDw

Guess that all depends on your definitions of best and smooth. I think the factory exhaust is pretty smooth (sounds mellow and distinctly Porsche).... and it's best from budgeting perspective since it's free. If you want something with more volume, you may want to consider the sport exhaust or aftermarket setup... at that point, your definitions of smooth and best will change.

This is personal preferance you just have to search youtube for soundclips and in the meantime you can always do the sneaky exhaust leak trick for that extra growl I wouldnt suggest opening up as much as the picture show though you will get insane drone with it open that much.

If you search on here, youtube, and on Planet-9, you'll find a lot of sound clips (try the exhaust shootout). Note that the DFI's sound markedly different than the first gen cars.

best is subjective, really up to the OP to figure out what they want from the exhaust and what they like/dont like.... there are many aftermarket systems that produce a lot of drone so that is something to keep in mind...My Milltek and the AWE that I have heard in person do not produce much/if any

Though I've not heard it in-person, the Remus exhaust sounded really good to my ears on video (not that these above don't- great sounding stuff!). I'm not certain about cabin drone with the Remus, but it sure sounded good out back on the Cayman.

+1 for the FVD mufflers. That is my Red 2009 Boxster S in the video and I have the FVD Sport Muffler (Sound/loud) version and I think it gives the absolutely best Porsche sound available with absolutely no annoying drone. The quality is top notch, you get +11 HP, and if this sound is not right for you then they can produce the muffler to be either louder or quieter. Rhonda at FVD is great to work with - really knows her Porsche "stuff" You can't go wrong.
