Does the Boxster/Caymen have that traditional inaccurate speedo?

Does the Boxster/Caymen have that traditional inaccurate speedo? usually reads 2.5-3mph fast. Seems all 911's does this. I personally can't stand it!

Thanks, I'll take that as a yes .

You "can't stand" your speedo being off by 2-3 mph? Surely you have bigger things to worry about!

CCns23 12-19-2010 11:13 AM

Yep, my Cayman is 3-4 mph off. No big deal.

Point2Point 12-19-2010 11:38 AM

My Cayman S speedo also shows 2mph fast.

TopGear 12-19-2010 03:07 PM

2008 Boxster S is 2 mph high by my Garmin GPS but both are in whole numbers so rounding may play a factor.

Our grocery getters are 5 mph high. I seem to recall reading somewhere that manufacturers all build in some inaccuracy to protect themselves from people going faster than the speedo reads.

I've had four water cooled Porsches now (boxster, 996, 997, cayenne). They all read 4mph too fast according to GPS.

I Can't stand my Boxster speedo reading 2mph slower than actual because I don't want my 75mph+ speed indicating spoiler deployed while I cruise LA freeways. In order to prevent this I have to set cruise control at 73mph to prevent hitting 75 mph going downhill, which means my max speed on cruise ia a actual 71mph & that is usually too slow to be in the "fast" lane but too fast to stay in #2 lane.

I read on another forum that it is illegal in Europe for a speedometer to read slower than actual speed so manufacturers allow a saftey margin in speedo calibration. :(

Geeze, with that kind of attitude we would all be driving lemons.

If something is wrong I speak out to let potential owners know. When you spend 6 figures on a car you'd expect the manufacture to know how to manufacture a speedo. When people don't speak out nothing gets changed!

This reminds me of the Subaru's glass tranny issue back in 2001. So many owner defend their crappy cars saying "you broke your tranny because you shift too hard" and claim that it was not weak. So sad, that so many subbie owners have so much pride like they own the company. Not really similar but funny IMHO.

I wonder if the KPH version is perfect and our defect is due to the cost saving and for some reason our conversion is not perfect?

diabolus2k 12-19-2010 11:58 PM

Yeah mine reads about 3mph faster. I don't mind... it's better than having it read 3mph too low.

mikegee 12-20-2010 05:21 AM

gt3, 996 cab, spyder ALL OFF by two or three MPH

I am pretty certain your paranoia is unfounded. I can guarantee that no one in law enforcement knows the speeds when you spoiler goes up or down :)

Before I installed the Techart Rear wing on my Cayman I got pulled over entering the FWY in Tacoma Wa .There was a cop on the FWY that said he saw my Rear spoiler go up on the on ramp so he knew I was going at least 70 .He ended up being a really cool guy and we talked about Porsches for 15 minutes ,He told me his father in law owns a Cayman and told him about the rear spoiler going up at 70 .He ended up just letting me go about my way without any ticket and asked me to please dont use the onramps as a race track .What a cool cop :D
