We drove the cars at a quick pace around the track. In my opinion the Cayman S was the best car. Although, it could use about 50 more hp and about 40 more lbs of torque. The Cayman felt more balanced. The 911's weight on the back end was clearly noticeable. I drive the 2013 Boxster with a 6 speed as my daily driver. I have 20,000 miles on it since last September. I still enjoy it daily. I traded a 2010 911 in for the Boxster. The 911s is just not worth $120,000+ in my humble opinion. My next Porsche will be the Cayman. If the rumors are true that Porsche is working on a Cayman GT3. That will seal the deal for me.
I kept my EVT700 997 Turbo but I passed on the 991 and opted for a Boxster S . I agree with you on how magnificently balanced the car is . I also agree that a few extra Hp would be nice .

My overall opinion is that if one compares the new Boxster/Cayman to the last generation car and then looks at the 991 vs the last generation 997 I feel the proportional improvements of the Boxster /Cayman are HUGE !! Part of the logic is that the 997 was a very tough act to follow . It was traditional in many ways yet modernized enough to do very well in its time . It was nicely priced too . The last gen Boxster/Cayman began to really challenge its limits with the Cayman R and Spyder . The new car priced in the upper 70's -80's is priced in that Spyder range but it offers street use comforts . It's still basic enough to feel like a Boxster wheras the 991 comfort style appears almost like a baby Panamera dressed in a 911 .

I like the direction of the Boxster/Cayman .
I have mixed sentiment about the 991 .

+1. Especially if the price tag stays near the rest of them...

A 400HP Cayman will change things.

It's already changing things. Last year Porsche sold only 1792 boxster/cayman for 2012. They sold 6145 911 during that same period. This year 2013 they have sold 5577 boxster/caymans so far, and 6889 911's. Things are already changing.

Dunno...

New Cayman, old Turbo. We'll see when all 63 trim levels of the 991 finally hit the streets.

I am currently having the same dilemma. I have drivin both and feel more comfortable behind the wheel of the cayman S but i am not sure about the 911s. Since I am just not used to driving a rear engined car and that'a what might be causing my uneasy feeling while driving it. For those that have 911 does this feeling go away and do you feel more comfortable playing around with the car? Every turn I was hesitant to push it as I didn't want the rear end coming out on me.

I had a 2010 911, I flogged it on a regular bases. Only in rain with less then 1/2 tread left on my Dunlop's(went through 3 sets of rear tires) did I have pause for concern. Although, I love the new Cayman S. the 911 is still a great car. It's just not the best Porsche in my opinion (price consideration). I think the Cayman S is the better car to drive, (fun) but the 911 is still a great car. But, my buddy who was going to buy a 911s($140,000) decided to get a 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo for $85,000, and get a Land Rover evoque as his every day car. He said the 911s are just getting to pricey. He won't buy a Cayman because it's not a "real" Porsche. Some people still look down on the Boxsters/Caymans, but I think they are the best Porsches.

sounds like you need a 918 Spyder

seriously, how has no one noted that Porsche's new flagship vehicle is MR not RR. Even the new 991 has it's motor moved closer to the center than ever before. I bet we will have a 400hp Cayman in the relatively near future.

U did! And not to mention the Carrera GT. It it a stretch to suggest the current Boxster is a "baby Carrera GT". Of course that's just my observation. Lol! The mid engine platform is best. It's just Physics!

That is a bad observation. Most people don't buy when they know a new model is around the corner, nearly all previous generation cars don't sell well on their last year due to obvious reasons. Some people will always get the latest and greatest so first year model usually does well. You have to wait a few years to look at the numbers again. I don't see why the Cayman/Boxster can't continue to do well, it looks gorgeous compared the the previous two generations.

Made the switch !!!

Had a 2007 997 Turbo with tiptronic transmission. Had an AWE exhaust on it, and ECU was flashed by EvomsIt. The car had close to 600 horsepower. I just did not enjoy it as much as my 2007 cayman I used to have. So, I Sold my Turbo and went for the 2014 Cayman S with sport suspension and sport exhaust and MANUAL transmission. It will arrive in November and I cannot wait. I am sure I will be looking at tuning it a bit to get more power from it. The new Cayman is amazing.

Funny they are just stuck on this rear engine thing.

Or Audi R8!!!

That is possibly the perfect car (for me). I asked for (since as long as I could remember) - a paddle shifted (eventually became dual clutches as these evolved), 500+HP, mid-engine, AWD car, ... that doesn't cost $2million.

I'm thinking that if the Cayman came with a Turbo (or an AWD version), a LOT of people would get them. Would it take sales from the 911? Probably. But they'd be selling to a whole new market. The ONLY reason NOT to do this, is because there is a greater profit margin on the 911 vs Cayman. And if that is the case, it furthers my personal reasoning for not getting another 911, justifying that the Cayman is a better car for the price (overall value, not performance). As of now, I'm thinking the front and side look better as well... More like a coupe. I WISH that the taillights from the 911 found their way onto the Cayman.
