2007 Cayman front coolant leak

Hello everyone,

I am new on here and also new to owning a Porsche and so far I love it! So i'm just looking for some more knowledgeable advice.

I purchased my Cayman 2.7 a few months ago and I took it for a service at the main dealer and they found a coolant leak had just started, it's around the steering rack at the front.

I did have a quick search but couldn't find much about leaks at the front.

I was just wondering if anyone else had come across this issue before and have a ball park figure on how much it might cost to fix and weather I should go for all new pipes as recommended by Porsche. They quoted around £800 to change 8 pipes at the front. It sounded like it was a fairly big job as they have to drop the front axle apparently.

Thanks for any extra information.

Radiators can develop a leak from the corrosion arising from the build up of trash that collects in the radiator ducts.

While I've never had a radiator develop a leak from corrosion I've had several replaced due to damage from hitting road debris or in one case from a radiator fan motor shaft failure.

No axle had to be dropped.

Any piping should not require replacement. One or more hoses might be bad though hose failure is rare. (The hoses on my 02 Boxster have nearly 275K miles and are original.) However, rare is not the same as never so if a hose is bad of course it should be replaced. The others should be checked and replaced if their condition warrants.

But AFAIK the front axle does not have to be dropped. I've never seen this "dropped" and I've seen a number of Porsches in for a varieity of issues at the front including steering racks, front diff leaks, along with bum A/C condensors, radiators, etc.

Hose leaks

Crispy_Jelly,
I wrote an article over on Planet-9 about adding a third radiator and changing the radiator hoses. If you are handy you can do this your self. You might want to inspect to see where the leak is coming from. Four of the hoses are in the wheel wells and may be subject to road debris damage. The article was focused on adding the third radiator so I'm not sure if you can get to the other four hoses that attach to the radiators without pulling the bumper cover off. The thing I learned is to be careful putting the wire clips back on the Henn joints correctly.

Good Luck,

Rob VN
