Starting in 2nd gear is getting annoying!!!
Im starting to get very annoyed with the tranny starting off in 2nd gear. Frankly im surprised no one else complains about this. Only ways for me to avoid this is shutting off the PSM or using the tiptronic which shifts like crap (coming from a BMW 550 SMG) I dont mind shutting off the PSM but I still dont have a clear answer as to what exactly im shutting off (safety wise) and if its completly off...
I was the same way at first, wondering why it just didn't start from 1st. However, when taking off the PSM.. the Cayenne is jerky as hell from 1st gear. It drives me crazy actually. So I almost always prefer to start in 2nd unless I'm trying to run someone off the line.
fuel economy
The reason to start in second gear is just for better fuel economy. One of the reasons that the GTS gets less mileage when in sport is because it always starts in first gear. Actually is not bad at all for everyday driving to start in second gear.

I think you have some options. I went for a test drive with the PSM off and it went to first gear most of the time. I also think a tune would fix some of the problems.
I prefer to start off in 2nd gear unless I want to REALLY accelerate. With passengers on board, it is much smoother to start off in 2nd gear.
With PSM off, 1st gear will typically hold until 4000 RPM, so I tend to manually operate the tiptronic tranny to up-shift sooner (~2500 RPM).
Starting off in 2nd gear is not new ... M-B cars normally do this. It produces a smoother take off from a standing start. M-B engines typically have lots of torque just above idle so this makes it easy to do. Now if you mash the accelerator, the tranny will down-shift to 1st gear, same as with the Cayenne tranny.

i agree with everyone... 2nd geat start in my CTT is fine for everyday. I know when I first seen it starting in 2nd I thought something was wrong.
When you need to race someone at the line or if you do it everyday at every light just go leave the PSM off or just use the tips...
