Tire Installation

I'm going to be swapping my summer tires for all seasons and would appreciate some insight beforehand.
My dealership in NYC doesn't carry all-seasons (only performance or snow/ice) and is quoting me $600 for installation. Another dealership (no all seasons) in CT is quoting me $200.
So with everything considered, I'm thinking of just purchasing an allseason tire set from tirerack and having it sent to a shop near my house in NY to have the work done.
Does anyone know if any special equipment is needed to swap out tires? Any additional insight on the sensors for TPMS would be appreciated too. When it comes to the sensors I'm completely ignorant. Can they use the sensors from the current tires? Do sensors need to be activated by the dealer? I've read threads about having to reset them on the driving console but wasn't sure if the mechanic replacing the tires would need to do anything.

Thanks in advance!

You can use the current sensors, you just can't use pre-2008 sensors on '08's of '09's. Sensors do not have to be activated by the dealer and you can activate them on the driving counsel in about 10 seconds. $600 is highway robbery. I just paid my Porsche dealer just under $500 for a set of new sensors for my snow tires and wheels for my '09 (because the ones I had previously on my '06 didn't work on an '09). That price included purchasing the sensors, installing the sensors, rebalancing the tires and putting the tires and wheels on the car.

Which dealer in CT did you talk to? If you talked to Danbury Porsche, Malachy will help you there. Those guys are really kind and helpful. I've bought my Cayenne S from them and they are not expensive compared to New York dealers

copasetic.. thanks for the info! yeah i decided to go with a tirerack recommended shop.. luckily for me it's only 10 minutes from my place so works out perfectly for me. they got awesome reviews so hopefully that'll remain true with me. oh yeah and they said it would be 120 for the job.. so leaves my wallet a little fatter so i can't complain about that.

canberk - i spoke with the people at new country porsche of greenwich. i think it's safe to say that outside of nyc it's definitely going to be cheaper and have better quality service.

although i bought my car in the city, i think i'm going to have it serviced in ct. my dealer raped me with additional work and a hefty bill when i took it in at < 5K when the check engine light came on. would other dealers provide loaners even if i haven't bought it from them? i'm sure original customers would be priority.

For my winter set, I bought 4 new sensors from Porsche...for $300. My tire shop charges around $200 to swap sensors from one set to the other. So, $500 seems about right to me.

I ordered some. Hakka R's for winter.
They are the BEST.
just pricey.

you could buy 2 sets of 4 of blizeks for the same price as one set of Nokians, but they are the best available, IMO.

I got my all-season tires installed this past weekend. But got one minor problem. I tried to reconfigure my TPMS but couldn't quite get it right.

When I select - ALL SEASONS - the profiles only go as large as 19". (I have 20"). I tried just selecting all seasons - 19" but it says that there was no configuration for that profile. So instead, I had to select SUMMER - 20".
I know it probably doesn't matter but anyone know how to add 20" to the all-season menu?

Sounds pretty high all around for swapping out TPS if you ask me.... $150 is normal here for swapping TPS from one set to an other, an extra $20 if swapping a set on and off the vehicle.

If you walked in with TPS in hand and just wanted new tires and TPS installed it would run you $75.....

Good Luck,

-Eli
