What's the difference between MSRP and invoice?

Does it mean the real value of the car is the invoice?

Invoice is what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the vehicle, MSRP is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price, and the difference is what the dealer makes on the sale. It can get more complicated, but those are the basics.

why does everyone throw around the whole 9-12% when its more like 18%??? Is this cost minus operations 10%?

not really sure, but invoice should always be stated as invoice...

Ok you are all wrong... Im just trying to help...I used to be GM at Porsche-Audi dealer..

All 2009 Porsches invoiced( that is dealer paid PCNA for the car) after 8/1/08 has 10% front end mark up( invoice to MSRP) and 5% "hold back". This was never neg before until now...
Obviously the dealer has expenses but that is the tru mar up.

Good luck!!!

Not trying to argue with you, so your saying no mater what car it has a 10% markup on it???

Can anyone else chime in on this?

so you are trying to tell us the site i received the info from is incorrect? <http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/2009-Porsche-Cayenne/price-with-options/>
I have seen this invoice break down from multiple sources for 09's.............

And an invoice does not necessarily have to mean what a dealership paid for a car. There are many ways to hide what one paid for an item. Such obvious ones would be public knowledge such as incentives incentives. Meaning a Manufacture sometimes offers lets say $2,000 incentive on a vehicle meaning the dealership can choose to relay that saving in cost to the consumer or not or half way. w/e you get the point.....

The only point I am trying to make is that there is a possibility a car can end up costing a dealership less than invoice. There is a reason why car dealerships have a bad reputation for not being honest. So Honestly I really wont believe what ever you tell me. I will just have my own understanding of how business goes through past experiences.

Makes sense to me. I just bought a Turbo S and this explains why the dealer was so quick to hand me the invoice and ask if I would pay that for the vehicle. When I questioned the ~11%, he said Porsche raised the invoice but not the MSRP so the difference was ~11% not the ~15% that I thought was in the car. Porsche is normally ~15% on the base & ~17.5% for options. My base invoice was 111,060.00 with a MSRP of 123,600.00 which is a 11.3% mark up from cost or a 10.1% discount from MSRP.
