Scratches on door and rear hatch guards

I've noticed that the guards are one of the areas that show the most wear on my car....I'm considering wet-sanding or buffing the scratches out...has anyone done this?

mine aren't to bad...just those metal guards are a little scratched from things sliding over them.

depending on how deep the scratches are, I'd try polishing/compounding them out before going straight to wet sanding
