958.1 Base Cayenne 3.6 V6 "Non-Porsche Approved" Oil Choices

Since 2012 owning couple Porsches, I finally have enough knowledge and feeling comfortable enough doing service on my own cars. Since it was always serviced at dealership, the car just used whatever they dumped in there.

I know there are 2 versions of Porsche "approved" oil for the base V6- C30 & VW 504. There are tons of opinions, comments and theories, flying all over the internet.... I will make my question loud and clear:

Has anyone use "Non-approved" oil on their Cayennes or post- 2012 Porsches for an extended time?

What brand & viscosity are you using?

Any effect? Differences? Pros & cons? V.S. "Porsche approved oil"

My goal is servicing this car as convenient as possible- best if I can just grab a jug of synthetic oil and filter on sale from local store and do it on the weekend...After all, this is a VW VR6 engine, not like the high-rev Porsche engine or turbo....

I will save the money for my next 911....

One of the approved oils is Mobil1 5W-30 ESP, which isn't readily available. I've used regular Mobil1 5W-30 (not ESP) and haven't had any issues. Next oil change, I plan to use "Castrol Edge 5W-30 03084". Several sites indicate that it is approved. You can get a 5 qt jug for $24 online from amazon, jet, and even Home Depot.

Thanks Alpine, also found your recommendation suggested in bobistheoilguy~
Looks like 0w-40 also works in the 3.6 V6 engine, which will makes life a lot easier since Wally world carries the PP Euro & Castro Edge as well.
