Kermit's got an RMS Leak: Time for an experiment so we're trying an experiment!

We knew it was likely coming and so now Kermit has a rear main seal leak too (still on the original seal). We've never looked at this as being a major issue (just an annoyance) and for 997GT3 guys it's always been a great opportunity to install the GT3RS light weight flywheel kit. Almost a positive thing if you will. I know some of us have talked and laughed together and almost hoped for an RMS leak in order to get one installed under warranty:p But for those of us with an RS with the light weight flywheel already in there what's a guy to do?

With a bit of precise machine work we were able to eke out another 3.2 pounds off of RS flywheel.

We're trying this out as an experiment for now. Suffice it to say that the 964LWF has been used for years and years in cars with up to 800plus HP and 993,964 guys have been doing the same thing for years so we're giving it a try too. I'll let you know my thoughts on whether or not it's even worth it but 3.2 off of an 11.5 pound flywheel in theory should make it rev even quicker. We'll also be installing the 996GT3 seal in there too hopefully avoid any more leaks. Either that or the block is getting a set of Huggies.

Hopefully in this case our glass is half full as opposed to half empty!

What's the difference in the 996 GT3 seal that will stop the leak?

AutoTalent Sep 19, 2008 12:08 AM

Hope it works so we can sell a couple :D

Amazing after the 996 varient GT3 rms, now the 997 ? I had mine done twice with 9/2007 being the last time and it was supposedly the new one from a different vendor. It still will weep a few drops after I park it. Best of luck solving the leak on a permanent basis Sharkster.

Keep racking up those miles and we will:D I like it... for marketing purposes we'll call this the Light Light Weight Flywheel. Sorta like the old Late Late Night Show:D

Cheers Rockitman, so far the folks we've replaced with the 996GT3 seal have been leak-free. So in it goes on ours:D We also have this strange 4-puck motorsport disc (extremely light) which we could put in there for a hilarious

Hehe exactly. Snowboarder54 figured it out. From now on RS' will get the L_LWF:cool: Oil was changed last time about 2.5K miles ago I think.

i don't know if this makes any sense but a day after i had the rms replaced (workorder says they used an updated seal), i noticed there was again a bubble of oil about to fall off. i was disappointed thinking geez here we go again. checked around the engine and thought hmmm.. let me give the oil filter a bit more torque. i didn't check how much torque over spec but i just gave it a 1/4 turn more. wiped the bubble off. it's been dry for 2 weeks now!
