Traqmate install on 997-3

The snow is still flying hear, and I had finished doing my Taxes so my reward was to spend the afternoon installing my Traqmate. My plan originally was to mount it in the area to the left of the battery, a friend did that with his 996-3 and it looked to be good. then he just put the antenna in the center of the front hood, on the following edge by the wipers. Then I figured out that my hood was not metal so the hood was out. I did like mounting it in the trunk however. I am not sure about the 996 3 but the area where the batter is not totally dry. Rain water flows in that box area from the wipers and it has drain tunnels to carry water away. Traqmate says that you should keep the sensor unit (SU) dry. So I mounted it in the trunk but under the plastic cover on the opposite side of the brake fluid fill point.

It was pretty easy and it fits. I removed the battery and behind the battery is a large rubber plug for you to pass wires. I ran the cable through that to the Display Unit (DU) which I Velcroed to my steering column.

Then I pulled off all the plastic covering including the piece in the trunk that covers the electronics. its held in by 8 screws and that center clip. I mounted the SU on the top and used some double sided tape to hold it in place, but this is a tight fit so the pressure on the plastic cover will hold it in place.

Lastly I had to drill a hole between the trunk and the battery compartment. I did the with a drill and then ran my wires from the trunk through the battery compartment, where I direct wired the battery. and then had to run the cable for the DU through the round plug in the firewall. lastly, I also had to run the antenna wire through where I will store it in the battery compartment. On track day I will pull it out from the battery compartment and will have to stick in on one of the front fenders, since the hood is aluminum. I will take a piece of 3M film and put that over the paint at the point that I will place the antenna so it does not scratch the paint.

That is it. a permanent mount and on track day, I plug in the DU and stick it on the steering column and I pull out the antenna and stick it on the front fender and I am good to go.

This is the Traqmate complete, I ordered the Hard wire. Also one last tip. at the point where I drilled the hole in the trunk to pass the wires through to the battery area, I took a piece of rubber hose, about 1/2 inch long cut it to allow me to slip the wired through the donut it created and then pushed that around the hole to protect the wires. coated it with some undercoating and was good seal.

Will that present a problem if you try and connect a track tach later on to monitor revs?

I have plenty of room to run wire. I Have not see how large the plug is that goes into the front of the Traqmate but I have allot of room for the plug and the wire is no issue. so I would say no, but until you try it, if that was your intention I would just make sure you have it all together before you do a final install. I made sure I had the room to do this much.
