Do I need a GT3?

(referencing a used 2007 GT3)

For:
Love the look, sound, street compliance & performance, and (to some degree) resell due to rarity.

Against:
I'll rarely track it and at times will use it as a DD

I had a 997S before and loved it. Never felt I realized its potential, but itching to upgrade instead of getting the same car again. Given above, worth the 20k-30k premium?

In my opinion you don't need a GT3, the 3 is an amazing car but is not the best DD, you say you never realized the potential of your carrera S,... if you are not going to track the car then this is going to be a waste, on the other hand just owning a GT3 may motivate you to change your priorities!!

The only way I see to justify a DD GT3 is if you already have a Cup Car.

Yeah, it's the logical solution, but car buying has never been logical for me

Reading over this forum, I've heard that the GT3 ride is actually more compliant than a sport PASM 997S, which is interesting to me since I think there needed to be a balance between normal and sport.

I have a B8 S4 as a my true DD, so I shouldn't say that the GT3 would be a DD, but it won't be just a weekend car.

Maybe the 997.2 S is the right solution then....

Logic has nothing to do with a Porsche purchase. A .2 911S will never offer the same intangible fun that a gt3 provides; even if the 3 is never tracked. I won't go more into detail about how much better my .2 gt3 is over my previous .1 C2S or .1 turbo as it has been beaten to death already.

I don't necessarily agree that you need to master your previous car's potential before moving up. With that said most buyers would never need anything more than a Boxster or Cayman.

Go to the track once and then you will definitely need a GT3! That was my experience.

I am afraid that the 997.1 GT3 may not be ideal for you as a daily drive in Seattle. Its ride is firm and its front lip will scrape. It also does not have PSM, which I think may come handy in Seattle weather.

A C4S or a Turbo, may be?

All good points. Thanks guys. I read a number of posts that said people were trading their 997.1 gt3s for 997.2 carrera s. Maybe that was just a minority's opinion. Seems to me that the 997.1 gt3 would hold value better, but maybe I'm wrong. I've driven only the 77.1S, so looks like I'll need to do some test driving.

As for AWD, per another thread, a point was made that I get enough awd kicks and giggles with my b8 S4, so no need for the c4s or turbo (even though I know we're talking apples/oranges). I agree with this for now, but a c4s will prolly be pArt of the test drive schedule.

Yes!
As a DD it has limitations - a friend has the 2010 CS as a DD and it sure is nice to have the bluetooth, PDK etc. I used mine as a DD for about 4 months and, at times, it was not the best DD out there (I finally got a Toyota to handle the LA traffic jams etc)

You will love the GT3 as a daily driver until it rains in Seattle.

You will end up wanting to track it to find out what it can do.

You may ignore any rants re: wasting a track weapon as a DD. Who can question the degree of joy you get carving a canyon with this precise instrument versus the joy that some other person may get whipping it around a closed circuit? But, you will want to track it.

The street ride of the stock .1GT3 is better than the 996GT3, and the .2GT3 blows them both away for comfort.

If you go 7.1/3, my guess is you will keep it a couple years then you'll want to trade it on a used 7.2/3.

PS - The S is a very good car. No dissing the S. But once you go GT3, you never go back.

A good point. I still have the S4, so the issue is less about daily driving it vs buying a gt3 and not tracking it. But the points made above are good as well. Guess the decision points are more around buying a gt3 in rainy Seattle and if I should just save for the mk2.

If I don't push the gt3 in the rain, is it really that much more dangerous than a 997S. Find it hard to believe, except maybe an argument based on tires, but it can't be thaaaaat much worse than a 997S

As for mk2, since the mk1 is such a step up from the s2000 I'm driving right now, I should be ok for a year or two before upgrading which I most definitely would want to do. The mk1 is still a very special car.

I would definitely go towards the GT3; sounds like you'll drive it a lot but not everyday - why not go for one of the best cars Porsche offers? I've had an 997S and 997.1 TT; the 997.2 GT3 rides almost as well in normal mode, has a great sound, is very precise especially compared with the 4-wheel drive TT, and you know its a real sports car. It's a more intense experience but unless you spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic, the GT3 is much more fun to drive everyday.
