996 RSR's and... racing Boxster???

Just saw these both in action over the weekend.

first time i've ever seen 996 RSR's in person racing, and they were awesome! unfortunately, they were at the slow end of the field, which was dominated by the uber sophisticated works GT500 class Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas.

still, what a thrill!

a few pics i was able to snap (TONS of footage, but haven't gotten around to digitizing the files):

also very weird... a racing Boxster with carbon bodywork, M96 3.6 liter engine and 6-speed hewland sequential shifter. effective enough, as it was way faster than the 911's and Ferrari Modenas. It did pretty well in its class.

The Boxster is run by Arktech, they make some incredible parts. Used to run a super widebody, double wishbone, 3L turbo 968.

there are two classes of cars in the series: the GT300 class, which is basically the privateer/small teams class, and includes the Porsche 911RSR/Boxster, Ferrari 360, Lambo Murcielago, Nissan 350Z, Toyota MRS, Ford GT, Honda NSX, Subaru Imprezza, plus a few other cars I can't remember.

The GT500 class is made up of the big factory teams of Toyota, Honda and Nissan. Toyota run the SC430, Honda the NSX and Nissan the 350Z. There are still a couple of Supras in there too, but i think these are ex-works cars now run by better funded private teams.

As suggested by the class names, "GT300" is for cars with 300HP and up, probably up to around 350HP. "GT500" is for cars with 500HP. However, the teams are fairly cagey about what kind of power their cars are putting out.

For example, the president of Nissan Motorsports told us (I was sponsored by Nissan for the trip, so had to attend some press functions) that the car "has 500 horsepower 'plus'. We know that other teams also have 'plus' horsepower, so we have it also".

Japan Super GT uses a rather unique set of sporting and technical regulations designed to encourage as many differnt types of cars to join, with the objective being variety for the fans. You have engines of all sizes, normally aspirated to turbo-charged. Power is controlled by the use of air restrictors, determined by an equivalency formula. so for a given displacement of engine, and depending on normal versus forced aspiration, a car will get a certain number/size of restrictors.

The rules are VERY open in other respects. And they seem to have achieved the objective of variety, as there are something like 13 manufacturers represented in the series. There are also 6 tire manufacturers that supply tires for the cars.

Unfortunately, the series is really only popular in Japan. They had one exhibition race in the 'States a few years ago, and one round of the series has been held regularly in Malaysia the past couple years. But it is largely unknown elsewhere. Pity really, as it makes for quite the spectacle.

cheers!
