GT3 tyre wear and delivery alignment

My rears wore to cord along the inside edges at 4700 miles, and I believe Noel's and one other GT3 did the same.

When Fred checked the alignment after purchasing the car, the rear toe was way off. I checked my new GT2 with 67 miles and its rear toe and camber was way off spec. I think shipping is bouncing alignments out.

anyone else have this experience? or another theory?

I can't see how riding on the soft rolling waves of the open sea during shipping would cause violent enough jarring that the alignment would go out of spec. My common sense says that a more probable cause would be the fact of the car being driven within the intial breakin period. The car may have been in spec from the factory, but when it's finally driven on normal bumpy roads, the settling of the car/suspension probably takes place making the car's alignment eventually fall out of spec...

rockit, but how badly could a car fall out of alignment in 67 miles?

Chris,

That's what the mech at BH claimed, but he was stunned at how far out the GT2 was... and couldn't explain that. Did you check you alignment, and how was it?

Watt,

A friend of mine has recently gone from a MK1 to a MK2. Within days of taking delivery, he was on the verge of giving it back, stating it felt like a 5 year old shopping trolley, wheels akimbo. Well after having a proper alignment carried out, hey presto, golden, and yep, the wheels where so far out the mech was close to measuring them in feet and inches.
I think the moral of this is that too many people are complaining of this problem, so perhaps the cars are not coming from the factory in spec. What else can it be?

Regards,

Steve B

Not yet. I am able to take my hands off the wheel on a highway straight and pick my nose for five minutes without the car tracking off-line...

Seriously though, it seems to track straight, albeit, that is not indicative of alignment perfection. I plan to have it checked out in May and will report back...

Steve,

I am deeply concerned that you know how a 5 year old trolley tracks; I know you could afford a new one. And I strongly agree that somehow factory aligns are bad on delivery. we need more data though. Perahps Paul can help when he gets back or maybe the great one himself el Journoman{wotaguy}.

Chris,

you must have an incredibly large nose.

I think the added toe-in is probably there at the request of Porsche's lawyers...

My car came with toe and camber all off a quite a bit. I don't have the sheet handy with me right now, but they were all over the place.

Camber ranged from -0.9 to -1.9 and with toe was not very close at the rear.

The track alignment helped a lot.
