2018 dc abrr - 09/28 - 09/30/18

For the second year, my wife Debbie and I will participate in a childrens’ fund raiser for Our Military Kids in September. This fundraiser is part of the second annual DC British Reliability Run (ABRR) which is limited to 50 teams driving British cars that are at least 25 years old. We will be driving our Caterham 7.

The ABRR will run September 28-30 (Friday morning through Sunday noon), rain or shine, and covers around ~700 miles of back roads touring through Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. The DC ABRR website with additional information can be found at:

http://www.dcbritishreliability.org/

THE CHILDREN'S CHARITY
This event is all about the kids, so each team will have the goal of raising at least $1,000 (the more the better) for Our Military Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our Military Kids (OMK), supports the needs of children, ages 5-18, of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members, as well as children of wounded warriors from all service branches.

For more info about OMK, see -
https://www.dcbritishreliability.org/

There are still spaces left for you to run in this event. All you need is a British car that qualifies as an antique, and three days to spend having a great time with a bunch of fun, like-minded people! (Last year, a large number of entrants were driving Jaguars, and we expect similar numbers this year.)

Thank you for considering supporting Our Military Kids and taking the time to read about the DC America's British Reliability Run. I am happy to get answers for any questions you might have about this event! If your schedule does not allow for you to drive in the event, please consider a donation to one of the teams.

Today was day one of the DC ABRR. Great roads, but lots and lots of puddles. Some puddles were large. At least one seemed to have a tide. I drove through in the Seven, and the water washed over the side pipe. The 'bow wave' reached the top of the nose. We were lucky to get through. The guy in the TR6 was not so lucky. The water pushed his radiator into the fan, and he lost coolant. His car died several miles up the road. The good news - we had help to him quickly, and he got to drive away in the 'Car of Shame' Miata. The support crew diagnosed the issue, called and ordered parts, and had the TR6 towed. It will be worked on today, and we expect it to be back in the hunt tomorrow. Great camaraderie amongst the ABRR teams, and the support team really outdid themselves on this!

From DC ABRR, Day 1

We went through some puddles. Some were shallow. One was not. In fact, that last one was so deep, the TR6 got its radiator pushed back into the fan. The TR6 lost its coolant, and died here, a couple of miles up the road. Rather than being a complete sour note, his fellow ABRR participants gathered around, and we brought in the support team. They brought a spare car - the Miata 'Car of Shame', and the TR6 driver was able to continue. Not only that, but the support team got the TR6 towed, ordered parts, and are having it worked on, same day. We expect the TR6 back in the lineup this morning!

Other oddities - an XKE's headlights got filled with water in that same puddle, and it covered my Seven's side pipe for a moment. Luckily, no real damage to either car.
