What's the best oil for engine and gearbox?

I recently purchased 2002 MINI Cooper S from a garage sale. Everything is working smoothly, but I have no manuals for it. I want to know what specification oil is recommended for the engine and gearbox. I can't decide between synthetic and regular oil. Just wondering what kind of oil everyone using and how often you change your engine oil? Any recommendation based on personal experience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

IMO. I would attempt to find out what weight/brand is in it and if it is what was used for the engines life. If the motor is strong I would not change that.

My 08 S sips Castrol Syntec.

Strongly advise that you post these questions on a very active mini site: www.northamericanmotoring.com

I imagine that synthetic is the way to go, but PLEASE check first before replacing fluids!!!

Good luck and have fun with the mini! ;)

For engine oil, the factory recommended weight is 5w30, Mobil 1 or Castrol.

I personally use Royal Purple XPR 5w30 for my 2010JCW.

Hope this helps.

I've been using the Castrol factory 5w30 fill or Mobil 1 0w40....
