Is the R35 GTR what you expected?
Is the R35 GTR what you expected?
These questions are for GTR owners only please. I'm in the market for a GTR but I noticed that there are so people selling their cars with so little miles. I was wondering if the car didn't meet their expectations. Any thoughts? What do you like or dislike about your car?
I have noticed that too. It might be people who really had to stretch to get the GTR and when you start seeing what it costs to maintain. Automobile Mag just wrapped up a long term test of one and at 18,000 miles it got the full fluid swaps which cost 1900$ and also needed all 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads which added 7700$ to the cost for a 9600$ service. Scary numbers but insane performance costs $$$ and I am sure there are aftermarket replacements for the brakes that are cheaper. But I do not own a GTR, I do want one though, so maybe I have no clue.

It is better than I expected. I've driven and owned other Skylines, Skyline GT-R's and G35's. The GT-R inspires confidence. The electronic gadgetry is awesome. Because there were no options (except for the iPod mount), there is no wondering - what if had this package or that package. Everything came standard so I know my car is as good as it could get that year.
It is streetable power that I can use everyday, and never be afraid of (regardless of weather).
Each time I do something to the car (maintenance or upgrade), I'm pleasantly surprised at the engineering that went into the car (i.e. the bolt on the inside of the rotor that pushed the rotor hat away from the hub).
Because I don't pay anywhere near the costs mentioned in the magazine, I don't mind maintaining the car. I don't know why anybody would do that (unless they aren't bothered enough to save thousands of dollars).
I'm going on my 3rd set of tires, 2nd set of rotors, 3rd set of brake pads, 2nd change of fluids, and I've enjoyed every minute of it - on and off track.
For the daily drive, I don't know of any other car (besides the Porsche Turbo w/PDK) that could be more fitting - and I'm not too sure that the Porsche has all of the options available that come standard on the GT-R (including all of the gauges).
Apparently, it is still attracting attention - just today - there were two people (that I saw) who came into my parking lot, got out of their cars (different cars), walked around my car, took pictures, and left... One was in an EVO, the other in an S5.

Had mine for 2 years now and so far its been great! Such an easy supercar to drive. My Porsche 996tt was great too.
As for maintenance, since I don't track its been relatively cheap. Oil changes, new tires. Thats it. But just like any car, once you track, then Im sure it could become expensive. Just be smart when buying parts. Nobody should pay retail, nor should you be getting raped by a dealership!

I have had mine for four months and the worst part about the car is all the money I am spending on mods. It responds so well to little mods, its impossible not to do exhaust, tune, down pipes, etc.
I have owned a porsche turbo, a gallardo, modified benz, and this is far and away the best of them all. As a third car its hard to not drive it everyday. Its that much fun. Everywhere I go, the car is admired. Its not completely taken over like the Lambo was, but still has onlookers all the time.

How is the gas mileage for those that daily drive ??
Ive heard some horror stories from ppl with these and the ridiculous cost of doing anything with them, it sounds like a great car with some serious maintenance issues.

Serious maintenance issues? Are you perpetuating internet myths or do you have a serious concern?
Regarding mileage, I average 14-18 city driving, 20-22 highway.
For the life of the car (including track events where I average 5mpg on track, 8mpg for a weekend) I average 14mpg.
As far as rediculous costs, it ran me $0 to get my car track ready. It only cost me $2k to get a Cobb AP, custom tune, and a Y-pipe for roughly an additional 100hp.
The only other costs associated with this car, are basically the same as other cars with equal performance.

My 2010 GTR was a much better car than expected. It was surprisingly easy to drive quickly and had amazing overall performance as others have said. Additionally, it took aftermarket mods very well and without a hitch-ever(aftermarket support is great for this car). Admittedly I wished for a bit smaller size and weight but the car performed well in spite of the handicap. After a year of ownership, I sold it to make room for an incoming car as it's role would have been redundant for my use. Also, I have to admit that inspite of my experience of no reliability or maintenance issues, I was always waiting for the other shoe to eventually drop so to speak
. In retrospect, these thoughts were likely unfounded and I would definitely consider another in the near future. It's one of the best cars I've owned. I will remember it fondly.

My intention was not to perpetuate anything, but i have read (on the internet) about warranties being voided for nonsensical reasons and just a very expensive overall cost of ownership. But anyways, i wanted to ask, not to perpetuate or hype.
Overall cost of ownership is quite normal for any car that can perform at this level (in fact, it can be quite a bit cheaper).
In terms of maintenance costs, research carefully. Automobile and Edmunds have posted breakdowns of their actual maintenence bills; these are often quoted starting points but they are the upper bound of reality. NAGTROC has a couple threads focused on actual maintence cost experience as well.
Still, the reality is even if you source your parts from non-stealership sources, the GT-R will end up being more costly than a 911 or any other volume production German car I know of and, I'd conjecture, more consistent with a modern V8 F-car. Your car will also be in for service roughly twice as frequently (I estimate 7 visits over 3 years vs. annually for most other cars).
Net, I'm guessing that the 3-year cost of maintenance for me will be a nudge over $4k, driving 10k miles / year and buying diff/tranny fluids from non-dealer sources to save a bit. However, if I need to do the brakes in that time (likely) the cumulative cost rises to > $10k. The parts for the brake job alone cost $5,100 and again, this is using non-stealer sources.
You can cut the costs if you use non-OEM parts, use third party techs, etc (particularly for the brakes). However, I'd also imagine you would take a disproportionate hit in value on the GT-R if you tried to resell the car missing some of the factory bits (this is an extreme comparison, but imagine what a used Stradale would be worth if it were listed with regular 360 brakes).
So this post doesn't take too "realistic" a tone, bear in mind I think the car is fantastic and worth it (and yes I intend to replace my brakes with OEM parts when the time comes). Just want to make sure you know what you are potentially getting yourself into...
The GT-R is phenominal. I am very happy with it and was very impressed. The gas mileage is better than it was in my M5 or CTS-V. It handles itself in all conditions. The interior is roomy compared to a Corvette and possibly more roomy than a Porsche 911. The transmission is amazing and is only eclipsed by the PDK.
IMO, it's the Japanese version of the 911 Turbo PDK. If you love that car, you will also love this one. For the price, it's incredible. Not perfect but one hell of a machine.
