Registering an out of state car

For those of you who have brought cars in from out of state I am wondering how intensive the vin inspection is. I am taking a title transfer from my dad on the 944. It is a race car at this point but still has lights and whatnot. The only problem is that it may or may not have been rebuilt. It still has a clean title, but from what I have read does require a vin inspection. I think there is only the a-pillar plate left. I have receipts and everything back to the window sticker for the car, but the paper tags that had the vin on fenders, hood and engine block are all missing or unreadable. How much of a headache is this going to cause me?

I really only want the plates so I can drive the 20 miles down to Pacific Raceway for occasional events. I don't have the facilities for a trailer right now.

Any advice is appreciated.

-Greg

It's a waste of time.
You show up, they check the VIN, & look over the car for other VIN numbers. Then they run it through the system.

It's not a safety thing, more of a "is it stolen" thing.

OK, doesn't sound too bad. But what if they do find another vin #. Do they run that one too and throw a lot of questions? or worse....

Don't know, I only did it once, & my car checked out. It took about 10min total.

You can do the car registering in Issaquah, behind the BofA and next to the pharmacy. Shouldnt take more than 5-10 min. I registered my old car from Arizona in about 6 min. depends on how long the line there is.

When I bought a car (86 911) in Cali from a private party, I just went to the DOL with the title and had it registered to me. No inspection at all.

OK, I didn't think it would be a big deal considering it's also a within family transfer. I was just reading up and got to the part about vin inspection which is only an issue because the chassis has been 'fixed' due to an unfortunate rear-ending by an old lady.

So_Fresh it was me that you talked to at XXX. Finding out about no emissions in North Bend made my year. If I make it out to NY tomorrow (4 day delay due to snow) I will get the title and try it when I get back.

Thanks!

why transfer title if it's in family. they will charge you sales tax unless you prove that it was given to you so bring your dad for confirmation if that's the case otherwise they will pull book on the car and charge you. if your dad trusts you and your driving so he won't get hammered if the car has an incident keep it in his name.

i just transferred today a california title on my new 65' 356 and they didn't even ask for a receipt. I told them what I paid for the car and they charged me sales tax on that number. It took 3 minutes to get plates.

if the car wasn't totalled there is no need for any inspections(except smog when applicable). dmv will charge tax on "red book value"..(their own book) unless seller states why price is lower(body damage,mechanical,etc.)..
that's all folks

He's right, mom gave me two of her vehicles recently and I paid zero taxes because they were both gifts from her. She came with me to the DMV to get it all sorted out. The longest we waited was for our turn.

Well I was able to get it all registered. I had a note from my dad saying he sold the car to me for 0$ and receipt for sales tax paid when we bought the car. I gave them money and they gave me plates! So hopefully I will be able to bring it to car shows and race days this spring.

Thanks for all your advice!
