First called the 340R due to it's power to weight ratio (170bhp and 500kg), this car actually weighed in at over 600kg at launch and about 180bhp. Only 340 are now going to be built. 65% of these cars had been sold at time of launch and production starts in December 1999. List price is £35,000. Latest news is that only 6 remain unsold as of 18th October 1999.

8 imported into the US by Lotus Cars USA, and only 340 total produced!

uh, the Atom is British

The 340R was a really cool car but it gets smoked in every category vs an Atom and isn't nearly as fun to drive. Also it cannot be legally registered anywhere in the US. I looked into buying one once...

I personally think the Atom is better looking. The 340R looks like a VW bug with the body panels missing.

Yes, and I am talking from experience.

Now that you think about it, the atom is faster and cooler. It should be in the next James Bond movie, seriously how awesome would that be.

I can't wait to drive an Atom, but it would be pretty cool to see a sexy CF body around it at some point. I dig it from a performance standpoint, and I realize that the form follows function...but imagine if they put it into a design contest at Art Center to have a super light CF sexy shell wrapped around it. You could run it with body shell off or on at your option.

Dave, the openness of the car is where all it's character comes from! If you drove one, you'd understand.

I hear ya, and believe that. I think it takes me firsthand experience to get smitten w/looks of cars, watches, etc. I already like the Atom from pics and seeing it on the road, I just need to spend some intimate time with one.

I have seen and driven the 340R in person and although it is not street legal in the US - it's sick as hell in the handling dept. It's literally like a c/f, 2 seater go-kart.

Not to mention, you get more attention on the streets in that thing than Pamela Anderson standing buck-naked in front of a Yellow Lamborghini Diablo SV on fire.
