Forged Performance: FD RX-7 Tuning
Today we had a customer stop by the shop in his 35R equipped FD RX-7 for a Forged Performance Custom Tune using an AEM AMS. Sharif has a ton of experience with the AEM, and was extremely pleased that the owner selected this EMS. The owner of this notorious mid 90's sports car had not been able to go over half throttle since the fresh OEM rebuild and turbo kit install. He desperately needed a proper tune for drive-ability and also wanted to get more power out of his build. The customer will return with his car at a later date for a tune at a higher boost level but Sharif was able to lay down an impressive 322whp at only 12 PSI on our Dyno Dynamics.
As some of you may know, tuning rotary engines is completely different from tuning traditional engines. Rotary's are completely intolerant of even small amounts of knock so getting good safe power takes quite a bit of care and understanding of how the Rotary engines operate. Because this customer is a DIY'er, Sharif spent some time showing him some additional features of the AEM, and gave him some additional suggestions such as allowing the AEM to control boost, and integrating his AEM wideband into the EMS. Hopefully he'll be returning shortly for a 16-18psi tune and 400whp+. http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...SC_8170550.jpg http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...SC_8174550.jpg http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/a...SC_8182550.jpg |
322@12 lbs on a 35R? Sorry but those aren't very good numbers. What A/R was the hot side and when was he seeing full boost?

crank up the boost!!

I would bet its a 1.06 T3 hotside and I agree that those numbers are not very good. Last FD I did running stock twins put down 332 on a mustang dyno at 15 psi. On a dyno dynamics you should be closer to 360+ at 12PSI. Typically 1bar nets you somewhere between 390 and 415 rwhp depending on porting of the motor. |
I'm betting it's a stock port engine. I'm making just about 300whp on the stock twins/fuel system...that 35R should be pushing way more than that @ 12psi.

Hopefully he can get it to a reliable 400rwhp, is that possible with a rotary?

The more you modify a rotary, the more reliable it seems to get.

I'm dynoing my new 35r setup on Thursday, hoping to make low 400's.
|
I think that is a very conservative tune. Sounds like the owner still doing break in.
