the stages were basically early marketing terms used to sell packages... stage 1 being an ECU reflash/tune, stage 2 adding exhaust, stage 3 adding an intercooler, and stage 4 adding a turbo and supporting fuel upgrades.

because of the vastly different mod paths people have been taking the last few years, not too many people still say "stage 4" but you'll hear "stage 2" used all the time because it's extremely common to get an exhaust and tune (which is what i've got on my '05 STi). it's cheap and makes plenty of power, so a lot of people just stop there.

I've been around the Subie boards for years and after stage 2, There's really nothing as far as stages. Some OTS tuners (Perrin) have a stage 3 map, but that's their line.

I've tuned quite a few stage 2 and turbo swapped Subbies, the most recent being a VF39 swapped 2.5L WRX, and a 20G swapped STi... There are no "stages" for them.

Well we're all ballers on this forum, thats why we can afford "STAGE" packages as the likes of turbo upgrades from shops like Perrin, Ultimate Racing, etc...

Staged packages aren't what I would call expensive for these cars. However, I personally like to setup my own car and buy the exact parts I want accordingly... Nothing wrong with that. In the end, everything has to fitted and tune for the specific car. I go far beyond any "stage" with my cars anyway :).


Why so upset? I'm only pointing out that by referencing "stage 4", nobody has a clue what that is. As an example, I got two different answers regarding stages on this thread...

need to hot tank and then pick a crankshaft(75mm or 79mm) Going with 92.5mm pistons(as close to stock bore as possible) and I beam rods (possibly up to +4mm longer than oem, can't with 79mm crank)

"Teflon" (Scott) is right on the stages. I love my 2004 STI in Java Pearl Black. It's a phenomenal car. Unbelievably flickable, predictable, hang it out as far as you like but it always comes back-able, etc. With stage 4 mods, I dynoed 343 hp/373 ft lbs at the wheels. Completely reliable, quick, durable. It drives perfectly. Couldn't ask for anything more. An amazing car, period, and then when you do a value calculation, it goes off the map.

Make sure you do some research if you are going to stroke that thing. It seems like a lot of people have a short life with stroked Subie engines. I wish you the best of luck with the build.
