Engine auto start/stop, hate it or love it?

Hey Guys,

Had the Panamera 4 for 2months now driving it on weekends only but wondered if people like the auto start/stop feature. My wife doesn't like it thinking that it will harm the engine with the repeated starts at every light. What's the consensus on this feature? Thanks.

I turn it off. Minimal influence on mileage. Major wear on the engine.

It sucks....luckily, on the GTS variant (and perhaps all others), you can permanently disengage it.

+1.... I have never turned it on ......worried about wear and tear on the starter.

That's a really good point. I thought about that too but then I also thought it was designed to do it so it should be okay. And now come to think of it, the less work the starter has to do, the longer it will last. So from now on I will turn off.

How to turn it off permanently?

djantlive 07-26-2013 02:53 AM

There is a button to turn it off. I would like the feature only if I were in bad traffic or long stop light. It would save fuel and less chance of over heating. In general, it would be off

I don't like it and turned it off Day 1 on my new Panamera. My personal opinion would be that there is a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on electronic and mechanical components over time vs. little actual fuel savings to offset. Plus to me - it's just downright distracting.....

But to each his own; opinions differ.

I use it occasionally in traffic if I anticipate stops longer than 6 seconds, which is the cutoff for fuel savings vs. idle.

I enable the start/stop feature almost everytime I start my car. My car is also certified so I have a longer warranty. In the future, I will chime in and let the forum now when my starter needs to be replaced or not (in 2015) but what I find is I usually sell my vehicles before they reach very old age.

I have some trust in German engineering that the starter will be designed and endurance tested to function as advertised for many years to come, especially since the price of gas is much more expensive in Europe.

BTW - the fuel consumption on my 4S is averaging 19.6MPG. I have not reset this counter since buying the car.

BTW2 - using the same longevity logic, has anyone figured out how to disable the rear spoiler permanently? Cause you know, it goes up and down, up and down, up and down (repeat x1000), and eventually this component will break too... right?
