Clean Exhaust Tips

I finally got around to cleaning my exhaust tips. I decided to remove them to be able do get the job done. Each tip is held my one T30 torx screw. Removing the tips takes firm hold and wiggle until it is free, not hard to do. I first scrubbed them with a steel wool pad, once clean I added Brasso since that is what I had to the steel wool pad and scrubbed it along the stainless steel grain. Then

After,
I cleaned off the Brasso with a terry cloth. The whole thing was easy to do maybe about 5 min per tip. Installing them was easy too since you really can’t mix them up each pair only fits on one side.

Nice attention to detail! If you wanted to make maintenance a lot easier going forward, I would apply a ceramic coating to them. I did 2 coats on my M6 exhaust and there is no such thing as soot build up anymore. Extremely easy to clean as well. You'll want to use a wheel coating (heat resistant) so that the heat the exhaust gives off wont prevent the coating from doing its job - I used Gtechniq C5 wheel armor for reference.

Great idea Flo1989, thanks for sharing! wheel ceramic coating (Gtechniq C5) is what I have on hand. I will get it done now that they are still clean.

I've had pretty good results from using Mother's Aluminum Wheel polish on a previous car's exhaust tips....eventhough I'm not quite sure if it's aluminum or not, still did a good job removing the carbon build-up and dirt. Did it by hand but probably would've been easier with a powered buffer or drill polisher attachment.

I think the tips are stainless steel, the steel whool did a great job getting them clean but the finish was dull or matte. Once I used the brasso with the steel wool the shine came back to life. It was easy to do by hand, 5min each tip at most.
